Oil Change Help
In the past I have changed the oil in gas engines. But I never changed my oil in my Cummins, is done the same way. Undoing the drain plug and draining the oil. Do you use the standard filter wrench ?....( do you have to anything nuts like, filling the filter with oil before putting on ) Also do I have to the dealer for the filter or can I go to a local parts store.

It's pretty much the same. The drain plug needs a 3/8" drive ratchet. A standard filter wrench will mostly be needed for the filter, tho, mine is NEVER so tight I can't use my hands. Fleetguard, Wix, Napa Gold are all excellent filters to use. But don't use a Fraham. They're bad news for our motors. And yes, you should pre fill the new filter. If you have a 2nd Gen truck, you'll also need to drain the crankcase breather oil trap canister that's on the front of the motor.
EDIT: Only use diesel rated oil, i.e. Rotella or Delo.

Take off the intake tube. (just takes a flat screwdriver to loosen 2 clamps) Then once you get the filter broke loose, slip a 1 gallon ziplock bag around it and unscrew it the rest of the way and drop it in the bag. No mess, real easy.

I do the same thing- Use the metal end type filter wrench and a long extension from underneath. If you are careful, you won't loose a drop.
If this is your first oil change on a diesel, make sure your drain pan is large enough (3 gallons).
Fleetguard Stratapore is generally considered among the best filters you can buy. As I understand it, they make them for Chrysler.
Anyhow, you can get them at a Cummins parts house cheaper than the Dodge dealer, or go to Genos on line and get their 4, 2, 1 kit (4 oil filters, 2 fuel filters and an air filter).

I get my Fleetguard from here Genosgarage.com
I usally buy 3 and a couple fuel filters each time. Check out the Fumoto
It makes changing the oil even easier.

My drain plug...And it works very well without leaking, during the change or in between changes.
I use a metal cap-style oil filter wrench to loosen the filter from below. Once loose enough to turn by hand, but seal not broken, I remove the wrench and put a ziplock bag over (from underneath) the oil filter. This keeps the possibility of oil spillage to a MINIMUM!
Also, inspect the oil filter mount for the old oil filter gasket. They are known to get stuck on the oil filter adapter. If you happen to leave it on there and install a new oil filter, you will wind up with an incredible mess!
Pre-fill the new Fleetguard Stratopore (LF16035) from your favorite Cummins dealer (usually ~$11) and install to the filters' instructions.
Refill the crankcase with your favorite oil (Valvoline Premium Blue, Chevron Delo 400, Shell Rotella, Amsoil, 15W40 in most cases) with ~3gallons then startup and allow it to idle for 1-2 minutes while you check for leaks.

I used to take a 1 quart plastic pop bottle with the top cut out and slip that over the filter and and unscrew it, any oil will go into the bottle, (better idea than a bag) but now I just unscrew it without a problem.
I don't trust those little valve hooties people replace the drain bolt with either, last thing I'd want is for one of them to screw up.
