Oil change AMSOIL nasty stinky

Hey I've run synthetic since new and this was the first time I used Amsoil and I've never smelt used oil that made your nose curl. Wish I could tell you what it reminds me of, maybe bad house vacuum belt thats ready to retire its self. My Delvac never smelt this bad. I know some say Rotella smella but I think this tops it. So I'm sending a sample to blackstone to see if anything shows and to see if Ams if worth the 15 bones a gal more for there Synthetic. Oh 9k on oil filter change in the middle.

Don't know man.. that COULD be a sign of something going on in your motor.. But I could be wrong on that too. I would definetly send a sample to be analyzed... I've never had any issues running Amsoil in my truck.

I recently changed the oil for the first time. This is the first time I'v changed oil in a diesel engine. 12 months/10K miles, Dodge dealer oil and filter.

Holy C rap, that's some nasty stuff! Yes, it smelled bad. Don't get any on you, it's tough to get off. And it will really stain the garage floor.

Synthetic oil has two advantages -it can handle high heat (like 300*), and you can extend the drain interval. If those two things are important to you, it's worth the money. Otherwise, stick with standard oil and use he money for fuel.

Normal, Amsoil does stink also after an oil change. Just changed mine this week. Going to get hay today. I am sure it will smell. No oily smell, hard to explain the smell of it. It has always done it on my truck.

I use the Valvoline Premium Blue as rec by Dodge/Cummins, change it and the filter at the 7~7500 K rec intervals, never had any odor problems.

The only odor problems I have ever had was when I changed out the front/rear diffs, the factory stuff smelled truly nasty. I replaced the factory rec diff fluid to the Amsoil fluids. I have changed out the Amsoil in the diffs, no odors.

If you do the math and take the costs out over 200K, it will cost you about the same in oil/filter costs, maybe save a little using synthetics, overall the costs are somewhat moot. There has been sufficient proof that using synthetics will get you a longer engine lifespan, but I reallydon't know if it will make much difference in the newer engines with the 3rd injector event, the soot increases wear. I installed bypass oil filtration to hopefully address the soot issue and premature wear.

I guess I have been using amsoil too long, since I started changing my dads oil back in the early 90's... I have never noticed a foul smell.. But like I said I can probably count the non-amsoil changes I have done in the last 20 years on both hands, with fingers to spare.

I don't really notice a smell after changing my oil. Been running the Amsoil for 70k+ now.

You want to complain about a smell. Come smell my 12v after a fresh oil change w/ Rotella. lol

Which Amsoil product are you running?
I was trying to figure out what "9k on oil filter change in the middle" means. How many miles on the oil?
How many miles on vehicle?

Sorry I had 9k on the oil and did a filter swap at 4500 mile in. Amsoil 15w-40 heavy duty diesel TBN 12. Thats what they recommended I use for my driving and my local climate.
I'll be interested to see the difference between Ams and Mobile Del. after it's used and test result. I'm a firm believer in synthetics but there a big difference in price between Ams,Mobile,Rotella. But this time cause as most know moneys getting tight these days. Si I found Rotella T6 full Synthetic that I put in this time as they were out of my Delvac. It's $15 less gal then Ams and thats a $45 savings that can go to food or bills you know.

I use Amsoil 5w30 HDD and a Fleetguard Stratapore oil filter for one year and over 7500 miles and not had any problems and still had a TBN 9.5. In fact by the time oil the next change comes in Oct I will have over 10K on the oil and filter. I bet the oil will still be good for further usage based on past UOA reports.

If you arn't using an AMSOIL oil filter then you may not see the real difference. There filters are designed to handle the synthetic oil. They filter better than FRAM.

Yes the AMSOIL does stink. You can go up to 3x the normal interval if you use the proper filters and you can go up to 25k if you use a bypass system and send in samples.
