Not so smooth idle

Any thoughts on why my engine sometimes idles rough. There isn't a set pattern, but sometimes at a stop light it happens. I feel it more than see it on the tackometer. I use the Wal-Mart diesel additive (grey bottle) and MMO combo in every tank. Changed the fuel filter and Oil and Oil filter both at 6500 miles, I'm at 8400 now. This has been happening since I bought it.
thanks for any thoughts,

Jamie

Mine has done this a couple of times as well. What I did may not be the answer but it has worked both times it started idling rough. I got out on a backroad and from a stop, floored it and just ran the crap out of it like a 16 year old was behind the wheel for a few minutes. It blew black smoke so thick I could not see behind me. A couple more times of this, the black smoke had about quit and after that, it ran perfect again.

You guys running high flow injector connector tubes? That is what my truck does with them in! Smooth most of the times and then jumpy every now and again.

Yeah mine idled funny stock about 2-3 times a month. Now it seems to do it every other day, no rpm change but just a little rough running only at idle and only when the truck is warm. Comes and goes when it wants, I was concerned but Im getting used to it. Not something you want out of a very expensive truck though. I am my own warranty shop now so if any of you guys find the problem please let me know. Thanks Rye.

Do the electric plugs on top of the motor need the dielectric grease? Or is this a software issue?

Mine just started doing it the other day... Got the truck washed and when I drove out it was shaking some at idle... Runs fine... Checked the oil and no diesel in it... I'll just see if it clears up...

Mine does it every once in a while too. Run the **** out of it and try to get the EGTs high and keep em there a few times and itll clear up for awhile. I think the injector tips start getting gunked up if you don't get em hot every once in awhile. Burn it off and blow it out the tailpipe!! A good time to do this is when a ricer cuts you off and you let yourself get good and mad and show him what that big slow truck of yours has under the hood.

Mine never had this problem, but when I had the ECM updated recently with the TSB flash for the long crank, I swear it does idle smoother and also the idle does sit at 850 rpm now. The black smoke seems to have been reduced as well. Power is the same.

I too have been experiencing this.

At first, I drove it easy worried that there was a lack of fuel or something causing a miss.

But, it definitely isn't down on power when it happens...so I concluded that it just needed to be run hard and 'cleaned out'.

I did the same thing mentioned above - just laid into it really hard for a while and it clears it up.

I did notice that I run into it in humid weather more so than typical weather...not sure if that matters.

Sure is annoying sitting at a stoplight and shaking like crazy. I'm used to it in my cammed mustang, but not in my diesel (although you'd think I would be).

Post up if anyone has any other ideas. Good to hear I'm not the only one though.

PS: I know it's an old thread...

Which TSB is that for a long crank?
thanks Jamie

Not sure if it is possible for everyone, but if you can hook up and tow around a trailer, I think it will do more than just hammering the pedal. I usually tow once or twice per month, and my truck always runs smoother after a haul.

Mine doesn't run rough, but it surges every now and then when I am sitting at a light with my foot on the break. I can see it ever so slightly on the tach. It did it the other night to the point that I thought the ricer behind me hit my hitch and bumped me. I checked later and he hadn't, so it must have been one of the surges that pushed me a couple of inches at the light.. Things that make me go hmmmmm.....?

Mine has done that on ocasion.
If I stop and drain the fuel filter canaster it fixes it every time.
BTW I do the canaster drain on a regular basis anyway, but this fixed the problem every time.
Also you might want to consider changing your spark plugs and wires....or not.

The long crank TSB is 18-017-05. That was for my 2004.5
See http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2006-index.htm for details for your year.
