No-load engine rattle???

Here's the scenario: cruising at a steady speed on flat ground, I get a VERY annoying rattle/gurgle/cackle through the firewall. If I give it some throttle, it goes away. If I let off the throttle, it goes away. This is not the rattling pedal that we all know and love, but it is a similar noise. I've got a buddy with another 3rd Gen that also has this issue, but his isn't quite so pronounced. Anyone have any ideas on where to start??

Another One

I have the exact same thing. I've also tried a few things. i did a write up on it but nobody responded. Read it and let me know what you think.

My main problem is a noise while cruising. Happens mostly from 1500 RPM to 2300 RPM. I’ll list all the symptoms below, and everything I’ve tried so far. I also have the 48 RE. The noise is kinda like a TV channel that is white noise and a clatter sound (yeah good description hu?)

1. Happens while cruising only, in gear

2. Coasting and Heavy fuel (more than ˝ throttle) no noise

3. Under a load, (load, Trailer)

4. Place in neutral while cruising around 65, noise goe’s away

5. Rev motor between 1500 and 2300 rpm while in N moving at 65 no noise

6. Rev motor between 1500 and 2300 rpm in N while parked, no noise

7. The tic can be heard while idling, kinda a tic. (very quiet here)

8. Quad box on makes the noise “more pronounced” or louder, Quad box off and the noise is still there but about half the loudness.

That's what mine does, I've tried so many different things, and I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. I'm stumped. I'm still trying to find it. Somebody said it could be the fuel pressures caused by some boxes, however mine will do it either stock, or with the box on, which leads me to believe it's something normal (why would it do it stock) and if it blows up, obviously something was wrong, not from me. My noise started at 18,000k Miles. Checked valves, all good, didn't check for a pushrod, as some said there bent, but I would think that noise would be all the time, not just crusing. I hope mine dosn't blow up.

Well it sure seems to be the same issue from your descriptions... The truck seems to be doing just fine in all respects, i.e. no power loss, smoke, economy changes, etc. etc. It's just a darn annoying thing to listen to while toodeling down the road

Same

Same here good millage (when I keep my foot out of it, but even still getting 15 hotroding it with power). It is anoying, not sure what it is. I'm still researching mine. Might put some rubber fuel line over the inecter lines, see if that dampens some noise??

mine has a very similar noise. but not at cruising speed only when stopped in gear with foot on brake pedal or just allowing the truck to roll in gear. gets quieter with running the truck for a while. more pronounced with fresh oil change. no idea what mine is either dealer told me there is no noise

Talking

I have lots of noises and the rattle described.
But the truck runs great(except for ongoing drivetrain noise).
It has a long warranty so I have stopped agonizing about it.
This is my first diesel, but I think a lot of these noises are normal and vary with temp and seasonal fuel.

Of course I could be way wrong here as most of the guys here have had diesels alot longer than me.

My biggest mistake was test driving this thing...one long hill, the turbo whistle and the "hand of God pushing me feel" and it was all over for me.

Tests

Well I had my tone ring advanced a bit, so i turned it back, the noise is even more noticible with it retarted (moved back)???? So I'm going to advance it farther next time and see what happens. I still think it's something with the fuel pressure. Could a failed relief valve cause the rail to be louder than normal?? Do they fail open or closed??

just got my truck back from dealer today. turns out the 65-70 mph that i thought caused my problem is actually a 2000 RPM vibration. they told me they have know idea what it is.

Well since this is my first diesel, all the noises are new to me and therefore hard to interpret....

I notice a rattle in mine, mid rpm range...seems like its on the drivers side....Have no idea what makes the noise

I swear there was a knock on the passenger side yesterday, but not today

Truck runs great anyway

Or maybe I spend too much time reading here, which makes me worry for no reason

This may not have any bearing on the problem, but there is s TSB on a loose tag on the rad, but I think this is more of a vibration than a rattle. There is also a TSB to change a couple of steering hoses that cause a vibration, but again, this does not sound exactly what you guys are talking about.

Yep my truck does the same thing. In Park nothing but in gear (R or D) it will rattle. I do believe it is in the tranny. Possibly flex plates (?? mentioned before) or maybe a loose TC. It has done it since the first few days I have had the truck and still does it no worse after 1.5 years.......I ain't to worried.

It's normal. Mine has had the same sound since new while cruising at high way speeds. From what I think and this is my opinion, it has something to do with the pilot injection or the sequence of injection events. I could be way, way out but like I said that is what I think it is. Never has bothered me enough to have it checked out.
