Newbie with a cold weather no start.

$4k later, the engine was put back together by a local speed shop and another 1k or so got the pump and injector replaced. Unfortunately the truck never was the same and I had to trade it in on a new one. I won't patronize that dealer for anything in the future and advise anyone to avoid the Dodge dealer in Cleveland, GA at all cost.
Ok, the fuel pump. There is a small black cylinder about 1 3/4" in diameter and 4" tall bolted to the back side (rear of the truck side) of the fuel filter. One fuel line goes into the bottom of this cylinder and there is a wiring bundle/connection at the top of this cylinder. I would tend to call this a pump. There are no other filters or pumps between this "pump" and the fuel tank.
The batteries are both Interstates and appear to have been installed in 06. I would expect more life from an Interstate but who knows how old they were when they went in the truck. I'll let you know what happens when I replace them.
If any of you live in or know of a good diesel mechanic around Atlanta, I would appreciate you passing on his name.
Thanks,

The lift pump will run for 30 seconds if you bump the starter before shutting off to prime the fuel filter bowl after replacing a filter. It will stay on if you start the truck. You will hear it clicking when you turn the key to the on position as you are waiting for the grid heater.
I'm not sure about the batteries. It's definitely worth checking, but my truck will start when it's below zero and unplugged. It turns over pretty slow then, but comes to life after 2-3 cranks.
