New Turbo on and still problems ?

Ok I just finished putting the new turbo on and I was hoping for a cure all. No so much . lol The engine runs great and don't miss but it has a lot of blowby when I take the oil fill cap off. It is puffing like a smoke stack. What amount if any blowby is acceptable ? The engine has 222000 miles on it so it is not a new one by any means.
I am a newby at this diesel stuff. Thanks. Joe

Did you have a turbo failure. If so make sure you pull the CAC and clean it out for any oil residue.

The turbo really has nothing to do with blowby, thats pistons/rings.

Did you only replace the turbo becuase of the blowby?

Yeah, the CAC won't cause blowby. You have bad rings or a melted piston or something wrong in one or more cylinders.

No the turbo was worn out and leaking into the exhaust.
I bought it with a bad turbo so I replaced it , but now it's running I see a lot of blowby.

With 220K on it the blowby could just be from wear, maybe it was a little neglected by the previous owner.

A LOT of neglect not a little. 220k is just getting broken in good. Since the turbo is bad hard telling what the issue is. Could have run a K&N and dusted the turbo and motor, or, too much fuel and trashed the turbo and melted a piston or 2.

Time to pull the head and see just how bad things are.

OP, you need to fill out your signature and tell us specifics on the truck for a better result.

Broken rings is only thing if you are lucky. Must have miss read the puffing like a smoke stack comment.

Ok new update, The blowby is not as bad as it was yesterday. I don't seen any blowby comming out of the vent tube. The filter don't seem to be stopped up. Everyone I have talked to says drive it instead of tearing it down. Everyone except my son who swears there is something wrong. Will blowby damage the new turbo ?

Blowby won't hurt the turbo.

There is a tool called a manometer that can measure the crankcase pressure at the vent tube. It may not hurt to find someone that has one.

If it's not bad and it runs good then I would ensure the fluids/filters are all good/new and drive it. Keep an eye on things and see what happens.

That could have just been condensation. Was it puffing out of the oil cap when the engine was cold or fully warmed up?
