Fuel Milage

I got the 04 with the four speed auto. About 600 miles on her, in town I am getting 16 and on the hwy about 20-21 thats babying. Now when I drive her like I stole her I am getting 11 in town and 16 on the hwy. I noticed a big diff right away. Now this is all provided my onboard milage calculator is reading correctly.

Littledave ,
I wish I could get that kind of mpg's . From what I'm reading they do or they don't get good mpg's I could baby it all week and not get 16 even on the highway .

ssteve when I picked my truck up from the dealer had 20 miles on it. Drove from Dallas,Tx to my house about 330 miles. Maybe 12.5 mpg. it didn't start to get better till around 20,000 miles I have a dually 4x4 auto. fuel bill sucked for awhile and if i drive 60 to 65 mph just like everyone has been saying it gets better. Hook up to something and pull with it that will help seat things in. I know you don't have many miles on it but sometimes fuel filters can go bad. I know you don't have to change that often I change every oil change. which is about 6500 miles change it out the (fuel filter) and see if that helps can't hurt.

Good point Gary....fuel quality is important to mpg. I always use additive and use a verified 49 cetane source....makes a difference. I drop off a mpg or two without .

I've had my truck 2 weeks now and it has 1100 miles on it. Acording to the over head, I'm getting 19.5 around town (not taking it over 2000rms and not using ANY BOOST. As soon as build boost, you just as well flush the toilet. My milage would drop to about 13 or 14 if I were in the boost often around town at say 1/3 throttle.

I use a conditioner but the highest cetane I can find is 40.
With 49 cetane I would get much better mpg.

Ssteve look around. I thought I remember hearing about a few Amoco Powerblend stations in baltimore. THey have a 47 cetane min. You can call bpdirect and find out the number of the local terminals, and they will tell you exactly which stations are serving up the good stuff. WOrth a few phone calls IMO to get the good stuff. bpdirect.com when you call, navigate until you get the diesel fuel techincal specialists...

I have an '03 QC HO 6-spd 2500 3.73 4WD and get 16.5-17 in town. I get about 21 at 65mph. Like everyone else has already said, how hard you drive it and how fast you drive on the highway make big differences. Doing 55 on flat land I can consistently get 23 mpg but if you start throwing in mountains and driving 80 it plummets pretty quick.

Fuel Milage

I improved my milage 2 mpg by towing! Listen to this. I've been reading how you need to break in the engine by towing something heavy. Plus I had the engine stink from the clear coat on the exhaust manifold. So I had to tow this tractor about 150 miles. Total weight was right around 7500lbs. The trip was on a highway with gentle hills. My truck is an 03 HO auto trans. I had about 10,000 miles on it. I figured I could push it hard for the trip and really break it in, and cook the clear coat off my exhaust manifold. I started from stop just a couple of times floored, up to about 70. Mostly I would slow to the bottom of a hill and floor it going up. I would not make it down shift. I didn't want to push the auto, only the engine. I would stay floored up these long hills till I got to the top and then easy off. Sometimes the truck would not excelerate at all. It would sit at 50 mph or so and really work going up. I did this for the entire trip. Coming home I reset my milage just on a whim. I got 19.9 coming home. I usually got 17.5. I went up again and got the same 19.9 round trip. The truck seems to run better also.

My mileage in warm weather is around 20.5 average with mixed town and highway. In town mileage here isn't bad, not too many lights and stop signs around here. Now that its cold, mileage is around 18.5 w/ Power Service in the tank. I have a handshaker and 7k on the rig. The mileage WILL get better! I was getting 15 on the highway after driving off the dealership lot. Within 4000 miles I got much better mileage!-Steve
