new truck poor performance
I bought a 04 srw 48re HO on 12/09 and the mpg was 12-13 I was expecting 15 city 17-19 hoghway according to what i've read.
Now what's wrong that my mpg is so bad ? I read about people getting 16 right off the floor and than improving.
I have over 2 k on it now and can't see it improving that much.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance ,Steve

I bought my 04 QC 2wd with the 6 spd on 12-6-03 and got 16 mpg right off the bat. I now have about 1600 mile on her and she's getting 18.5 mpg.....................must be that 48re transmission.......
seriously..........I think it has a lot to do with how you drive it......

When my '03 was new it got about 17.3 MPG. 14K miles later I am getting 18.3-18.5MPG. If I run it hard, I get slightly less, but nothing near what yours is getting. I bet the 48RE and relatively new engine have quite a bit to do with it. There are some people with the automatic tranny getting excellent mileage though. Also, these engines usually don't fully break in until about 15-20K miles depending how much you are towing with them.

I've got the 47RE and your mileage sounds about normal. Most of the people that are getting alot better mileage are running the handshaker.
I've currenlty got 21k on mine adn if I stay out of it I get around 12 around town, thats real city driving, very seldome getting to 45 and lots of sto and go traffic.
The best that I've gotten is around 21 on the highway running around 60-65 and staying out of it, those fast starts and racing people will put a big dent in the fuel mileage. Also those long warmups don't help either
Give it time and it should get better when it gets broken in

04 HO 48RE 4:10's 4x4 and I am getting 15.5 in the city with less than 1500 miles on it...
12???? Normal?????
I can get that with my 01 lifted, on big tires, and bombed!!! That is even with a SICK Edge Drag Box.

Ssteve, that's normal don't worry. People getting higher mileage have either 4x2 or the 6spd, both which help mileage a lot....and also some people live in areas where they have few stoplights, and slow speed limits, this also helps mpg greatly. If you aren't babying it, or are doing mostly city stop n go driving, 12-13 is normal. Some people just dont see the same road conditions.
When my 04 4x4 48re 3.73 was new, around Sarasota I averaged 15.2 - 15.7 totally babying it. When I decided to let my right foot have it's way, that dropped to about 14.2-14.5. This continued for a while and I thought it was hopeless, like my truck was maybe less efficient than some others. Then to my surprise, as forum members posted, the mpg slowly improved around 6500 miles. All of a sudden I went from 15.2 to 16.3 -16.5 around sarasota. I couldn't believe it. Two tanks worth confirmed the improvement. At 6900 miles I installed the scotty 3 and jumped to 17.3. *** Now I was in fort lauderdale this past weekend for new years, and traffic was awful. Stop and go beach/city traffic etc. I got 12.2 - 12.5!!!!!!!! Just wanted to show the wide range with various traffic conditions etc.
From new to 5500 miles 75mph = 15.7mpg on my computer if I reset it.
5500-6900 miles 75mph = 16.5 on the computer
6900-current miles 75mph = 17.4 on the computer .
These aren't a golden rule by any means but these are what I've recorded on my truck. Point in case, relax, your mpg will improve! Towing a heavy load will help expedite the break in/mpg improvement also. Hope this has helped!

9.8!!!? Is that with heavy towing? If not I'd suggest checking fuel and air filters, and maybe changing fuel sources! There is a confirmed source of 50 cetane BP diesel supreme year round at the 77 and copley road exit...take advantage because you're lucky!

Fuel mileage is in direct relation to how much lead is in your foot. IE: Same highway tractor owned by cousins trucking company can have 1mpg (20 percent) difference with two drivers. This is on software he has with one of his new Volvo trucks. Only difference is drivers between the fuel mileage.

Ya'll also have to remember that us people in the colder states are running blended #2 diesel in the winter, so mileage is going to take a hit. They usually start blending around the end of October to early November to prevent jelling problems when the winter months arrive. Those that live in the southern states are running straight #2, so their mileage will be better during the winter months.

I bought a 2500 4X4 QC HO with the 48RE on 6 Nov 03. Now have 12000 miles on her and have gotten as good as 23 mpg on highways at around 55 mph and as little as 14.1 pulling a 12750 lb load. The worst I have ever gotten on a tank full has been around 14 and that was either towing or driving like I was 17 again.
I know that it did get better after about 5000 - 7000 miles.
Try changing the Spark plugs...lol...j/k
My first post here have read the site for a while and joined tonight... So i guess im gonna have to start bombing this sucker in the morning.
PS Dont depend on the overhead cpu to tell you the accurate mpg they can be off aspecially if you have aggresive driving habits...

My 03 with 4.10's constantly gets 15.3 using a calculator. The overhead says 16.4 so if you are using that as a guide it's not always reliable. I know it's hard, I have to force myself to do it, but try keeping the hoof out of it for a tank full or 2 and see what happens.
