New (rebuilt) fuel injectors and BLACK smoke

Just had a local Cummins authorized shop replace the 6 oem injectors with rebuilt injectors, as 3 of the oem's were damaged. A week earlier, I had my truck at a Dodge dealer and they diagnosed "fuel contamination" as the reason for a new onset of rough idleing. They cleaned/purged the fuel system and wanted to install $400-600 apiece new fuel injectors. I said "No thanks", as I had already spoken to the local Cummins shop about the rebuilt injectors. My truck has only 70k miles on it. I've had a Volumizer installed since the 4 or 5K mileage mark. Have hardly ever had any black smoke to speak of!! The fuel filter has been replaced approx. 5 times since new.

Now, with or without the Volumizer switched in, I have massive clouds of thick black smoke on acceleration. I'm actually embarassed to drive it!

I've just spent 3-4 hours searching the forums here for reasons. The possibles are that the engine isn't getting enough air or that maybe some electronic module component is all of a sudden malfunctioning. The rough ideling is gone and the engine's performance is back to what it was originally. I've also just purchased and started using Stanadyne fuel additive.

I'll be taking it back to the Cummins shop in a couple of days and would appreciate any insight you all may give me.

TIA,
Bill

What injectors did they put in your truck, also sometimes electronics will go bad and they can do strange things?

I believe they said rebuilt Bosch injectors.

As for the electronics, yeah, uh, "stuff" does happen.

What did they charge you for parts and labor?

@rustyshakleford - until the last 500 or so miles there never was a problem.

@TE-44 - the rebuilt injectors installed were $110 each x6 plus labor. Total was $1036.

Update -
I took my truck back to the local Cummins authorized shop (Southeast Power(SEP), Daytona Beach) and they were able to eliminate the Volumizer as the problem. They also noted a DTC of P0628 and from forum readings today I see it may be the lift pump. SEP said I'd have to go to the dealer to pursue this.

I looked at the receipt I received from the dealer's repair and I see this item:

FP-Number = 68003870-AA Module Fuel Pum 140

and the price of $390.85.

Is this the lift pump? If not, might/should they have looked at the lift pump at that time? I have to assume (I know) that they cleared all codes before returning the truck to me, so this code is new since their work of a month ago.

Any input on this appreciated.

Bill

EDIT - After the rebuilt fuel injectors were installed I ran without the Volumizer switched on a couple of times. My perception is that the truck ran just a little doggier than I remembered before I bought the Volumizer. I have no other apparent signs of possible failure, except for the black smoke and the 0628 code. Is it a failure just waiting to happen?
