New low stall converter or new truck?
So I have been asking Goerend a million question about installing one of his low stall single disk converter and upgraded valve body into my bone stock truck. Why do I want to do this, because I hate the factory high stall converter so much, that I am willing to dump my truck for cheap if I can't get a lower stall converter into it. So Dave answered all my questions, then gave me about 45 minutes of more info to digest. Lots of good info. But now I have a problem with installing a low stall converter. Sounds like my check engine light could start coming on. He explained to my why it could happen, something about the computer isn't seeing enough slippage? Something about input/output speed that the engine/trans see's. I don't know, he made it make sence at the time. And he said it could also have to do with driving style. Some people have problems, some don't. I drive like a old man. Very light throttle everywhere.
So my question is, for those who have installed a low stall converter. Did you CEL come on? I would like to know on average, how many people have to deal with this. Because to tell you the truth, i'm not going to be driving around the the CEL coming on, and having to reset it all the time. I'll just sell the truck.
And it's an 2007 with the 5.9. 11500 miles

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
I beleive the converter is technically a low stall converter to start with. The stator blade angles are those of low stall gassers. The tremendous low end torque of engine and heavy weight of truck make for a imbalance. Perhaps a compromise to not quite as agressive reduction in stall would be prudent. It is not like all the """slipage""" you notice is lost. You are getting torque multipication as this """slipage""" occurs. JMHO of course

I have a low stall converter from suncoast along with their transmission, and I love it best mod I have done to the truck to date. No CEL, no slip, good firm shifts, lower trans temps, and not sure why but I get about +1mpg now if I can keep my foot out from under the hood.

"al5608", I'd go with the TC and VB, IMO it would be the best mod you can do to these trucks. I have the same gripe you do, I can't stand the torque converter in these thing's either. You have to rev them practically to 2k before you get any real good movement and at that speed your mileage is nothing. I plan to do this ASAP even though I will probably keep the truck stock and don't drive it like I'm in the Daytone 500.

My stall is not that low (Loose for an aftermarket due to laggy turbo) and I love mine. TC is in signature. The way it should of been built from the beginning..... Pulling heavy I barely have to mash the go pedal to get going. Before I was reving to 2500 RPM just to get moving. You'll love it. No need to sell the truck. Just take a chill pill and wait for the parts to show up....

I have Dave triple disk and it works great, to answer your question yes the CEL occasionally comes on, and yes only when I am babying the throttle enough that the engine rpms change very little when it shifts gears. Its happened 3 times in the last year. IMHO Daves TC and tranny setup is the way the truck should have been from the factory.

As for the other questions a better TC makes towing much better, with the factory TC pulling 11k up the mountains here the engine would tach out at 3500rpm and the tranny still wouldnt have enough rpms to shift because the TC was slipping so much. I dont have that problem now my towing speeds in the same conditions have increased at least 15mph with less throttle and lower engine rpms. Taking off requires fewer rpms and if I get on the throttle more than I should the truck will still spin the tires with a 11klbs of 5thwheel on the back, something the stocker would never do no matter how much throttle I gave it.
