Don't know if they use the same front driveshaft between 2nd and 3rd gens, but I had mine replaced 2 weeks ago at 67,000 miles along 2 bad U-joints. Rumble is gone. $600, but I had the $100 deductable drivetrain warranty.

i posted this about a week ago on how to have it fixed front drive shaft baby...

also some people are having the vibration fixed by having something on the front of the trucks changed. :/

Sorry if this is a kinda dumb question, but . . .

I'm going on a road trip this weekend and it would be a perfect opportunity to try my truck without the front drive shaft to see if it gets rid of the vibe. How do you remove the front drive shaft? Is there anything else you should do once you get it off?

Thanks,
Neil

On the 02's it's 2 bolts on each u-joint (front and rear), and it drops right out. Make sure you mark the yoke position at both ends so it goes back in the same orientation.

How do you remove the front drive shaft?
There's four bolts (15mm?) that hold the CV joint to the flange on the transfer case. Remove these first. A combination of sockets, universals, and wrenches will be needed to get position on all four. Alternatively, consider rolling the truck so that one bolt is easily accessible (at the 6o'clock position), then continue to roll the truck (without you under it, of course ) to bring the others into position.

Once that's removed. you can collapse the shaft slightly and drop it off the transfer case flange. The four bolts holding the shaft to the differential are Torx-head bolts, either a T-40 or T-45 (can't remember which now). With the back end of the driveshaft removed, you can move the shaft around to allow access to the bolts. Remove these four, and the shaft will pop off.

16mm and T-40.

I did this backwards. The torx bolts are easier to get to without moving the truck, and once the front end is off, you can rotate the shaft freely to get to the bolts on the transfer case flange, as the transfer case is not engaged to the front.
