New CTD w/Auto
My family has 6 CTD's running around and we just convinced my uncle that he now needs a CTD. What he wants is a new 4x4 CDT Auto but he has had very bad luck with his auto's behind his V-10 dodges and is nervious about buying a trans that isn't proven yet. I can see why he doesnt want another dodge auto but he is talk about buying an undurable chevy and we can't have that talk around us hardcore CTD fans. He does alot of commuting and pulls a 6K lb sled all the time. So how are all your autos holding up and what should he get in the way of truck specs so that his CTD wont fail him like those V-10's did. BTW he babies his trucks I mean really babies his trucks so abuse will not be a factor.

There was a post on here or maybe TDR (both?) with JD power transmission figures from Ford , GM/Allison , and DC. Failures per 1000 units are as follows: Ford - 3.2 failures, DC - 3.4, GM - 6.
Have your uncle put that in his pipe and smoke it.

Search on "48RE". There are some stories of hard use and long miles on that trans already.
The gist I found was that if you had a 47RE, and took it to a trans shop to be built up, you would basically have a 48RE.

I've got the 47 RE and 23K miles. Oh, yeah but I Drive it like I stole it
Did I say I put AMSOIL in it @ 2kmiles, well I did and of course DAWG the hell out it, especailly when I pull my 11400 5vr

Just traded a 2003 with 11,400 4:10 with 48RE some miles towing 15,500# the remainder empty. Previous 2003 48RE 3:73 with 14,000 miles, no problem with either truck. I went to the 6 speed on my current truck so facilitate the use of a Jake Brake.

They key to making a Dodge tranny last is not always babying it.
The harder you are on it, the better it should hold. (Within reason) (Not more power, but more pedal)
If you are always at 1/4 throttle, the trany wil fail,,, low line pressure is the cause. If you put your foot into it harder,, the line pressure will be up significantly, and power won't be up too much more. (line pressure increase will be greater than power increase)
That being said,, some Dodge trannies are just more problematic than others.
Change the fluids, pay attention to what it's doing (3rd gear starts, TCC lockup, etc), and don't overheat it and you should be just fine.
