New A/C compressor clutch dragging
Yesterday I installed a new compressor, liquid line, and dryer. All went fairly well. Wasn't able to get any oil out of the old compressor and went ahead and added just over 2 oz to the compressor and 2 oz to the dryer.
I had to crank over the engine for a while to get oil up to my turbo feed line(newly rebuilt turbo) after that was done I started it up for about 20 seconds and noticed this...
05 cummins new compressor - YouTube
I went ahead a shut it down, warmed up my cell phone and took this video. so all in all less than 1 min run time.
What I am thinking (hoping) is that with no 134a in the system there is no restriction on the compressor making it easly free wheel with the brand new "tight" clutch. Pulled the belt off and the compressor spins freely but cant get te pulley to spin with out the compressor spinning. 12v compressor clutch plug is disconnected. What are your guys opinions? Oh and the truck was/is outside and was 0deg out.

In the manual, there is a spec for the air gap between the clutch plate and the hub. I would check it with a feeler gauge to make sure it is within the spec, if so, you are probably right that with no charge there is a lack of restriction to keep the compressor from spinning. At that point I think I'd go ahead and do the evacuate and charge, break in the clutch, and just monitor it.

Thank you for the quick reply. I think your on to something with this air gap. What upset me is that should have been shimmed properly from the factory. All that time I spent putting on all the new pices in below freezing temperature, spending the extra money on "new" parts.
Half tempted to see if this non-Ac belt that will be here on Thursday will actually work. Might just rip out all the new parts and take it back. Throw on the old stuff and wait till I get somewhere where people know how to work on these things. So fed up with this Ac system.
