Needle Grease Gun Fitting

Is there are specific or certain size for the needle pin grease gun fitting?

Or, are they universal size?

Do they hold up, or do they break easily and should have a few on hand.....

What part of the drivetrain requires the needle fitting? I thought it was just the outer axle u-joint, but wanted to make sure.

THANKS!!

There is a very difficult to find cone shaped grease hole on the front drive shaft constant velocity joint that requires a needle fitting to apply grease. You will probably find under the hood of your truck a small sign that tells you to grease it each time you change your oil or every 3500 miles or something like that. The best fitting that I have found to grease this spot is one that looks just like a hypodermic needle. It is small diameter with a sharp angled tip and I believe is made to inject grease through the rubber boots that cover sealed joints. It is a fairly fragile item, but works great for this chore. I think I got mine at a NAPA Auto Parts store. There is another grease fitting that has a cone shaped end that some people use. I tried one of these and managed to get a lot of grease on the outside with little or none going inside.
As for finding the right spot, there are many previous posts with helpful pictures and you should be able to find them if you search.

I believe the driveshaft fitting came in 2005. My 04.5 doesn't have it.

I bought my needle at Napa and they only had the one size. It actually came as a two pack so you have a back up. Also, as stated above the hole is in the cv joint not the ujoints. Good luck on finding it. It took me a while to find mine, but not too hard. I was rotating tires anyways and had the truck completely off the ground and spun the shaft around till I found it. If you're lucky it wont be covered in mud like mine was.

Have a good one.

Plews Lubrimatic #05-037 is one that goes right inside the fitting hole, and it works very well. It's fragile, but if you're careful, it'll survive.

Thanks for the info.

I just went to NAPA and bought a Lincoln grease fitting kit and a new Lincoln grease gun....the old grease gun worked, but I had the urge!

Oh yeahy, my dad also dropped off a case of 12 Mobil Synthetic grease tubes!!! Should last for a very, very long time!
