need help, stuck in utah, bad injector or blown rings?
So we're currently in Moab Utah, came here with the jeep to do some wheeling and camping with the RV.
Along the way I started to get some serious knocking, but only occaionally. Seemed worse with the Smarty/edge turned off. Turned them back on and it went away(I was hauling a 17k load).
Figured it was an injector going bad and babied it into our first stop. Spent the next day touring Yellowstone park and it ran fine so we hooked the trailer back up and headed out the next morning.
Truck ran well all day then 50km out of Moab the engine started missing and blowing white smoke out the exhaust. No DTC codes were tripped and I was able to drive on to moab with lots of smoke, reduced power and increased EGTS. Also there seems to be a lot of blow by, enough that it was pushing oil out the valve cover seal. The smoke is "definatly" from raw, unburnt fuel.
Soooo now I'm here is moab a long ways from home with a big trailer and a broken truck. I'm here for 10 days so I have some time but don't want to waste it.
I'm "hoping" that its just a blown injector and compression gasses are actually coming up through the cracked body.
I'm afraid the rings are shot and the engine is toast.
I'll be pulling the valve cover tommorrow to have a look. Any other thoughts/suggestions on what to look for?
Is it even possible to get blow by from a cracked injector?

What is your oil level look like? Is it "making" oil with diluted diesel? Mine did that with a cracked injector. I was able to baby it home with no ill effects by stopping and changing (draining and refilling only) my oil every 60 miles. Since u are so far away from home you would need to fix it before proceeding. Hopefully it's just a cracked injector.

Thanks for the shop info.
Oil is actually down a bit but the blowby has been pushing it out and making a mess under the truck.
Did you have blowby, white smoke and a miss with your cracked injector?

Well, in my case I was out in deep East Texas on New Year's eve....in a rain storm and didn't have any symptoms at the time towing my toyhauler. My oil pressure light came on for a split second while idling would have been my only clue but I didn't really think much of it until I noticed oil all underneath my truck. My injector was cracked and putting diesel in the crankcase. I HAD to get home because my father in law was having surgery and my wife's son was in town from N. Carolina. So I limped the truck home changing the oil every 60 miles......or so....draining out about 5 gallons of diesel/oil mix at a time. I ordered some Flux injectors ASAP and Don M advised me about one being cracked (as suspected). Subsequent oil samples showed no damage to the engine whatsoever.
Your situation may be totally different. And, Im sorry to hear it for you. I hope one of the diesel shops can help get you going quickly and salvage your vacation.

Well tried removing the wires off the injectors today one by one and there was no huge noticable difference.
Pulled the first 3 injectors today and they all looked fine. Guess I'll try pulling the back ones tommorrow.
Any suggestions on how to test for a bad injector?

Just kidding about the religious crap. Sounds like stretched head bolts or cracked injector. When your engine is warming up, throw a little beer at each exhaust manifold port and watch how long it takes for the beer to evaporate compared to the other exhaust ports. The one that takes the longest too, or doesn't evaporate is probably the the bad injector or coolant leaking cylinder. Injectors are easy to pull, head gaskets not.Good Luck for your dad.

cLAYH,
FYI all freight to Moab (UPS & FedEx ground) originates from Grand Junction, The Cummins shop could have their parts runner drop it off at the UPS hub as it only a few blocks away and you would get it same day..
What runs have you done? metal masher, tip over challenge, the rim trail? Moab is a fun place that's for sure..

cLAYH,
Some more FYI, Moab has a 4x4 club I think It is called the Red Rock 4-Wheelers any parts store or the visitors center should have info on them. Their members are very resourceful and helpful to their fellow four wheelers..

Hi cLAYH, any update on what's ailing your motor. All that crankcase pressure sure sounds like a scuffed cylinder bore. You can hear it with the engine running and oil filler cap off. You will hear a whistling sound as the piston comes up to compress the air/fuel mixture. Good luck.

Took it to a dealer and they say the motor is toast. Way too much blow by. Have a friend that's going to tow the truck home for me and my sister is going to bring my dad's truck down to tow my trailer back.
Drove it to the dealer in colorado junction, about 200 MILES. Did ok other than the miss and excessive smoke. If my trailer wasn,t so dam heavy I would consider trying to get home with it.
