Per the Cummins site the differences seem to be an additional oil spray on the HO pistons as it runs hotter, programming, and bigger injectors compared to the CARB SO. The CARB SO runs cooler, where I've seen one reply stating that per Cummins it will result in longer engine life, but it evidently also generates more soot as it has the 3750mi severe duty oil change instead of the 7500mi oil change on the other two engines.

If you know you're going to be towing get the HO, if you have the cash get the HO, if you plan on selling it soon get the HO, otherwise don't worry and enjoy it. I have the SO, so far don't use it for towing, and payload doesn't seem to slow it down. I wasn't going to get a truck this year as I couldn't find an affordable short box HO ST with a manual, but I did find a new SO for price that I have yet to see anyone come close to beating. Eventually I'll put some bigger injectors and a mild box on it, but other items have higher priority.

if i dont live in CA, do i definitely NOT have a CA SO? got mine in maryland...

For commuting and occassionally pulling a small boat, why do you want, or need a diesel? I'd get a gas engine!

Re:Need Help! Standard Output or HO engine

Gas engine ? This is our first truck and based upon our experience so far I'll never buy anything but a diesel in a larger vehicle, a Cummins diesel at that. Two friends who have watched my experience with my diesel have ended up getting one too. One had the larger Durango which got 10mpg in town, 8mpg at best when towing while struggling up hills, and he was amazed that I was getting 17mpg in town. Now he climbs the hills with the rest of the traffic when towing and finds that his Laramie is quieter than his Accura on the highway. Another friend with a brace of older Chevy trucks picked up a 3500 Laramie as he was impressed with the power, the mileage, and the heavy duty construction. We were going to borrow his Suburban for a longer trip once as we needed to carry more than the 6 people that we can fit in either Taurus, but we ended up taking both cars as their combined mileage was 14 mpg while the Suburban got 10mpg.

I also expect my diesel to last a lot longer than a gas engine.

Re:Need Help! Standard Output or HO engine

I've got a non-CA SO. Granted, I've never driven an HO, but I think I have plenty of power for a stock rig (all previous trucks were gassers). I am happy ;D! I will definately do some BOMBing in the future, but thats because I want to do it, not because I have to. I am confident my SO CTD will do anything I'll ever ask of it. Sometimes you HO guys give me and my rig an inferiority complex :'( . -Steve

Well you know the North American culture. Bigger is better. (just look at the waistlines)
Since the HO is not badged differently then you have nothing to worry about re: inferiority complex. Only you know. ;D

Re:Need Help! Standard Output or HO engine

I say you definatley will be happy with the HO but as someone said earlier, the SO moderl has as much power as earlier 2nd gen models did. Look at how many of those guys are still happy with stock trucks. ??? Of course then again look how many of those trucks are bombed. ;D

Re:Need Help! Standard Output or HO engine

This thread sort of reminds my of the 80's movie Spinal Tap.

So why not make 10 louder. You don't understand this one goes to 11.

For those of you who have seen the movie, you will know what I am talking about.

I think both engines are already more capable than the truck, and especially the drive train, but hey 65 up a 6% grade with 8K #'s is a lot of fun. Buy the one that goes to 11.

No matter what type of machine(s) you've operated, how many times have you said to yourself "whoa, this thing has TOO MUCH power!"? OK, now how many times have you said or thought "Man, this thing needs more power"? Easy choice in my opinion.

Re:Need Help! Standard Output or HO engine

D.D.361- Yeah, I would have gotten the HO but the dealer where I got my rig had Laramie package HO's and that was it. So, I got the SLT w/ SO. At the time of the purchase I was diesel retarded and didn't think the HO was that big of a deal... Oh well, like I said before, I am still happy. ;D.
