Need help fixing 70mph vibration

I pulled the front driveshaft and expected it to go away, well it didn't. I feel it between 70-75 completely goes away at 80+. The vibe has been there since the truck was new. It is not the tires I have already ruled that out. Ujoints are new. I did do a search and didn't really come up with any other answers. I am going to have the rear driveshaft balanced. I did read that some have found that there is something in the transfer case that also causes this vibration. Has anyone else fixed this problem. My dealer told me it was normal along with the rear end noise when I first complained about it with 5000 miles. Since the rear was rebuilt under warranty at 50K when the noise got really loud.

I had a similar vibration on my 2004.5 truck. Never did figure it out and eventually sold the truck anyway.

You've eliminated most of the culprits. I suspect that there is a problem with the pinion yoke on the rear end or the output yokes on the transmission. Both of which are more costly repairs.

I'd be leaning toward the pinion gear on the rear since you stat that the vibration got worse after they rebuilt the rear end.

The speed it happens at can help you identify the culprit. Unfortunately 70 is right around the speed that tires show harmonic oscillations. You say you eliminated the tires, how did you do that? High speed balance? Could it be an out of round wheel? Even a warped rotor? Anything that resonates at that frequency could cause a vibration. Maybe an out of line u-joint. Does it vibrate in neutral?

I'm still thinking wheels not balanced or bent rim,bad tire, etc.
I had to get new front tires to get rid of a 60-70mph vibe.

There was one fellow who reported that it was a bent driveshaft - I would say it was a driveshaft that was not true, or perfectly straight, having said that, driveshafts are balanced, but like tires they DO also have harmonic oscillations.

There was another fellow who complained about a vibration at around 70mph, his vibration ended when he got new upper and lower ball joints.

The driveshaft is a likely culprit.

I had the same vibration 60-70 mph most noticable while accelerating, rear universal joint wouldn't last longer than 30K.
Replaced the driveshaft, problem solved.
Later "discovered" the reason the driveshaft was bad. The new vehicle prep doped up flunkies at the dealership got off doing hole shots with Cummins powered trucks.
---------------------------
This is way out in left field, but I read (can't find the link) a post about a guy that had a vibration in a Dodge Ram 4X4.
All the usual suspects were painstakenly ruled out one by one.
Finally an astute mechanic discovered the fiber bushing that supports the split axles in the front end had disintegrated.
The driver side axle is always turning so removing the front driveshaft doesn't rule out this particular problem.
Like I said, it's way out there, but a last resort possibility.

try switching your front and rear tires and see what happens.

Vibe

Check Your Driveshaft, My 04 Had The Same Vibration, New Driveshaft Still Did It. Had To Have New Shaft Balanced, Go Figure. That Was 60000 Miles Ago. Love My Truck And This Is From A Guy That Always Bought Ford!

I put the truck on jackstands and took the rear tires off. I can start feeling it at 60-75. gone by 80 vibration stil there. I will see if i can find a place to balance the rear driveshaft next week. Also i noticed that the balancer on the slip yoke had a little wobble in it. maybe 1/8 of an inch.

Great idea to put her up on jackstands.

Please let us know what the outcome is.

Did you get this symptom fixed yet? I ask because when I bought my truck new, I had the same vibration. 68 -72 MPH. I had the driveshaft replaced under warranty at 4000 miles. This made the problem 50% better, but the vibes were still there.

I was stranded last week in New Mexico when my LF brake caliper locked up and would not release. While it is there, I told them the rear driveline vibes were back. I have airbags, and had them up to 75 psi which helped the vibes somewhat. (Just came back from Moab towing).

Well I had to call them today to check on my truck (idiots never call you it seems) and they said they could not detect any rear vibration. I asked them if they dumped the air in the bags, LIKE I TOLD THEM initially, and all I got was "uhhh no we did not". So know I need to take the tech out for a ride and educate them on the issue.

Truck is '07.5 / 5.9 / auto / 4x4 / SBQC

Well I had the privilage of taking the service manager out for a test ride Friday, and he felt and heard the vibration right away when we were approaching the speeds the vibes start at. He said it was a very common complaint, even his own Dodge had the same problem (although his was a gas model). They did take the rear shaft off and check the balance, and said it was perfect. He assured me that there would be no damage done from this vibe (I'm not to convinced about that) and he said he would research with a Dodge Engineer about possible fixes, but thinks there is not a cure out for this yet. I asked that they get me this in writing, since my warranty will expire in August, to cover me if a rear pinion or t-case bearing goes south due to this. He said they have no problem in documenting this for me to help me out once the warranty is up. So Kudos to them.

This was a popular problem when my truck was new. Replacing and/or rebalancing the rear drive shaft was the only fix I can recall anyone having success with. Mine still does it but it isn't that bad. I just try to keep it below 70 or above 75 on the rare long hauls to keep my hands from getting numb from the vibration in the steering wheel. A couple of guys had success putting a simple hose clamp or two on their drive shafts to balance them. By moving the screw portion of the clamp around, they were able to improve the vibe. I just didn't have the patience to try this. I thought the newer trucks were fixed because of the lack of posts on this subject. This was a pretty popular topic back in 2004-2005 particularly with owners of short bed 4x4s with automatics.

Hate to bring back an old post but My 05 still has this issue. It seems there still is no hard fix for this yet.... Any progress with this yet??

On my '07 with 26,000 on it, I had a front pinion seal go out 4 months ago. After the dealer screwed up the seal replacement twice (they forgot to put the washer back in under the nut causing the nut to bottom out on the splines), I fixed it my self.

While I was under there, I messed with the front pinion angle and it helped. But there is still a vibration.

I have a new idea to try out, and will probably try it on my '05 first. A good friend of mine who owns an off road shop told me he had some driveline vibes on his Jeep Cherokee. He told me he drilled about a 3/16" hole at the front of his shaft, vacumed out any junk in the tube, then added about a quart of ATF. He then welded up the hole. He said this worked for him by acting as a "fluid dampner". This is similar to how a Centramatic wheel balancer works, or a fluidampner engine balancer for example. So if I get to it soon, I will post up any results. I probably will use a HD rubber plug and silicone for the fill hole in case I need add or remove fluid to get it dialed in, if it even works.
