need help 07 5.9 running hot

i have read back 30 pages of threads and no one else seems to have had this problem.. i am used to having a power stroke which the temp guage never moved at all.

i noticed on my last trip the engine coolent temps were going to like 210-212 up the hills. and staying 196 to 198 on the striaght runs. well i thought it was maybe i had been running hard with it for 4-5 hours and it was heat soaked.. well i unloaded it and drove it unloaded well the temps were like 192- 195 runing but if i even touched the pedal at all it would go to like 198-199.. i think this is way hot for empty and the way the temp swings up 10 degrees just touching the gas.. the truck has a 4 inch turbo back.. and the edge is on tow mode. i thought it might be the head gasket going but i noticed on the way home tonight i heard the clutch fan locking up (load wering noise ford used to do the same thing) only once and the temp went down to 189 when i heard it them it stoped and the temp went right back to 196.. when i got home i open the hood and tried to turn the fan. it moved free i could spin it and it would turn 1/4 to a 1/2 just by spining it a little.. shouldnt a hot fan clucth make it hard to turn ???

any help from others who have had a smoething like this.. or maybe these temps are normal for a dodge... thanks guys..

My 06 runs between 190 and 200 all the time, I don't even tow or have a programmer. 190 just normal cruising, 200 if I get in to it getting out in to traffic or playin around.

That is not hot at all. These trucks have 190 thermostats in them and that is why the temp stays up unloaded. Your truck is fine. It likes to work so go work it.

I have had my rad get debri between the air to air and the rad. Depends were you are, and ambient temp. The only time I hear my fan is when I`m pulling hard.

wow.. i am glad but 216 engine temp 1400 egt going up hill cant beleive she stays together... but thanks for the input guys.. do they make nice alum radeaters or anything to help bring the temps down a little.. let me rephrase that. i am sure they make them but are any cooling mods worth the trouble?

1st time that 1400 degrees was mentioned.. I would think this is what you need to get control of. A different radiator will not lower 1400 degree EGT temps.

A sig with what you have installed would most likely help you get responses from similar setup vehicles.

I had a thermostat fail on my truck. Temps would go up/down similar to yours but mine was weeping a little water around the shaft. Temps have been solid since replacing the thermostat but I do not have 1400 degrees. Did not hit 1350 on Dyno and rarely see over 1000 driving around.

Good Luck..

Your coolant temps are completely normal. Driving unloaded mine will sit dead on the center ( 200) most of the time with the AC on, If it's 10 below zero it will drop a needle with only below the half. Towing my big horse trailer in mts I see temops same as you. The egt's do seem a bit high however. The hottest I have seen mine is 1300 and I was really into it and backed out. I am completely stock on the engine however...

1400 is not that unheard of in these trucks. If you used to the old strokers, that the temps were way cooler. To get an old stroker over 1250, it was some work. In the Dodge, it just takes me merging onto the highwat to hit 1400. The debate over what your max temps should be never really has a defined answer. Some say run 1400 all day long, some even hit 1500. Others have melted holed in the pistons at 1400-1500. That being said, I normally try to keep it below 1300, and bieng an old Ford guy, around 1250 max when pulling up long grades.

it is not the egt i am worried about.. it is the engine coolent temp.. it goes up and down as fast as the egt.. if i hit the pedel or go up even a slight grade it starts to climb and the goes down just as fast.. if i put the trailer on it stay 204-216 the whole time. but still goes up and down.. if the cooling system was up to par it should never really go much past the thermastat open point..and should not move that fast in my opion..seems weird but if it is the same for every body then hey.. i will just get use to it..

Fan clutch is electric also.Won't lock up engine off.Make sure coolant is full and radiator CAP is good.A bad cap allows spikes in coolant.

It goes up and down so fast due to the fan being activated/deactivated by the ECM. These trucks have hugh cooling systems. Overheating one is not common at all, thank goodness. I hate an overheating vehicle with a passion.

thanks guys.. i had no idea the fan clutch is electric on a belt driven fan.. the truck only has 15k on it.. the trailer i was pulling is only 8k lbs loaded and the truck stayed at like 210-214 for like an hour straight.. i would think anything over 200 would be consided a sign of a problem.. if the truck has a 190 thermastat it should stay real close to that i would think... what is the highest coolen temp people see..

I have seen 210 or a little more when towing up pretty good highway grades in the middle of summer (100+ degrees).
