My truck wont shift out of first. Any Ideas?
Hey guys I've got an 05 3500 4x4 dually automatic with 91000 miles on it. I drove it home yesterday and all was fine but when I turned in the neighborhood it would not shift out of first. I tried to manually shift but that didn't work either. The fluid level is fine and the fluid looks pretty good. I'm having it towed to the shop in the morning but I was kinda wondering what to expect. For the past couple of months every once in a while it felt like it would shift from third back to second and then back up to third when taking off. Any ideas?

Your first gear band is gone. If you get under the truck and find a jam nut with a set screw in it adjut it in about 3 turns. If you truck shifts its the band and will need replacing. I had the same probelm a year ago.

I replaced both solenoid valves in the pan first. That will be your first move. However, be prepaired for the worst. I had my tranny built by a local Torque Converter Manufacture who works Tranny's on the side. I did the kevlar bands extended strut arm billet Triple disc & billet flex plate with valve body mods. Have been pretty happy for $3000

Bands cannot be replaced without dropping the trans and remiving the pump, front drum etc. Rear band is even harder to do. Loosing the band, is highly unlikely. It doesnt just work one minute and then not work the next. I would look at the gov, the wiring for a broken or loose connection and then address the chance that it's time to do a "contact cleaner" bath on the PCM connectors located on the firewall. OD is affected by corrosion on those plug connectors and if you look hard, the rear band, which is LOW gear, is located inside the pan, which you cannot adjust from the outside.

Similar problem
Needaram,
I had a similar problem with my truck years ago and below I've posted the discussion between myself and another member who had the same problem and this was the cure :

Hey thats great news. I still need to go look where my problem was. I just keep having other things to do rather than check how they fixed it. As far as I know we are the only two who had this exact problem. No one else on the forum ever said they had it and my dealer had no clue what they were doing. Also have a buddy who works at a diesel shop in the midwest and he's never heard of it either.
If your ever in Atlanta, look me up for that beer

I guess this is why it took 14K miles to show up, it had to rub all the way through. Thanks again and let me know where to send the case off beer or whatever you drink.
Thanks,

Diagnose vehicle and found DTC P2769 for TCC control circuit low. Follow flow chart and called Star, locate the YL/LB wire in pin #9 connector 109 chaffing on top of the bellhousing. Insulate and reroute wiring in connector Y1/LB.
Trace all the wiring coming from the bellhousing, there must be a wire getting damaged or something. Heck, if you want print this diagnosis and bring it to the dealer. Tell them to follow it.
Hope that helps. I know I was ****** spending all that time trying to fix it.

This will be my 5th trip to a dealer and it's getting old. 2005 Laramie
