Is It My Injectors?

Recently, I have been having a serious issue with my 03 5.9 starting poor in the morning, puffing out white smoke and sputtering real bad after starting. It will also "sputter" real bad when it's warmed up, but not as consistenly, and only when accelerating in 3 or 4 gear, or when taking off in 2 gear. But when you get into 5th or 6th gear and set the cruise on 65 it will run just fine. When I say sputter I mean it feels like it is not getting fuel. This lead me to think that the stock lift pump was going out, which is the reason I installed a FASS pump last weekend, BIG mistake. I have been reading around on this website and my problem sounds the same to those in which injectors have gone bad. Does the problems I am having sound like the injectors are bad? Thanks in advance.

I've changed the fuel filter 3 times in the last month thinking that was it. But I was wondering if their was something in the housing that could be clogged and not letting enough fuel in.

I have had number 2 injector replaced at 19k miles after having the same issues you describe. A thousand miles later, I'm having the same isssue again. I dropped off the truck last night and just found out today that Dodge is going to replace all the injectors and do some kind of reprogram. Some of the "officials" from Dodge just happened to be in the dealership today and evaluated my truck. Of course, the dealership did not have all the parts, so it will be 2 weeks befopre I can get the work done. I hope this fixes my smoke and rough idle at start up. pcm

That problem sounds similar to mine, what are the symptoms of an injection pump going out.

I didn't mean it like it read. I just meant I spent $440 dollars on it and it didn't fix the problem. I know I'll be happy I did it in the future. Yes, I do have the 100k warranty and it getting looked at this very moment. Do you guys think that having the FASS pump will void the warranty if their is an issue with the injectors or injection pump.

i would hope not, but its very dependent on your dealer. do you have anything in writing from before the fass was installed about the current issues?

Good question, let us know what happens. It's the main reason I have not replaced my lift pump.

From what I've been reading, yes, it does sound like your injectors. There have been a lot of 03 owners with the same issues and replacing the injectors fixed the problem. Several of them thought it was the lift pump same as you.

The dealer called me and he said it is the cam shaft sensor. Does this make sense to you guys. It will be covered by warranty. I am fine with this as long as it fixes it.

wow! I thought it was just me. The other day at about 22,000 miles my truck started sputtering. Took it to the dealer (won't mention a name unless somebody asks me) and they said that number 1 inj was not responding to the injector kill test. When they performed that test it was sputtering badly. They also told me to my surprise that gasoline was in my fuel. Now I maybe young to some ppl but I am not stupid by any means. Lord knows what I wanted to do! Anyways they said they wouldn't warranty the injector. And it was going to cost $2440.00. I think the only reason I didn't go POSTAL up in that ***** is because I knew I could change it myself if worse came to worse. Anyways I picked up the truck. Number 1 injector looked to be locked open. I limped it home and on the way home number 1 injector started working again. I drove it the next day and put some injector cleaner in the tank and it has been running fine. Ever since I bought the truck it has had a ruff idle. Before this drama it wasn't until one day I was talking to another CTD owner that he told me my truck idles ruff when he leaned up aginst my truck while it was running. I also talked to a mechanic that said he had seen a couple trucks with the same problems. He said all the trucks with the injector problems idle for long periods of time (which goes for my truck). Anyways my truck runs very strong for just a #2019 Predator module, drop in K&N and a muffler delete. Still idles ruff so i might take it to another dealer and see if they will treat me better. Thanks for reading my story. Good Night!

next time, make them take a fuel sample and prove there was gasoline in there! some dealer employees try to pull some fast ones! the old story about 1 bad apple ruins it for the whole bunch is true when you compare it to dealers....IMO
