My first post!!!
Hello all. This is my first post here and I have a transmission question for you guys and gals. I am in the market for a 2500 and was noticing the 4x4 control. At what point did the 4x4 control go from the floor to the dash? Are there years I should be weary of as far as transmission reliability? I am really excited to be entering the world of diesel trucks and I want to make sure I get as educated as I can before I buy. Thanks in advance for any assistance you may give!

Welcome, you'll learn tons here!
I think where the 4x4 control is depends on the rim level. Mine is an SLT and has a manual lever on the floor which I prefer, the more deluxe Laramie has the electronic switch on the dash.
I think you can special order a Laramie with the manual control, so you may see the odd one.

Welcome to DTR.
I do not think you can purchase a Megacab without the electronic push button either. The trans question is the million dollar question. Some have had luck with the 48RE, some have not. Pretty much a theme is if they turned the truck power output up via a tuner, chip, etc then the stock transmission has had an abbreviated life. But not in all cases. To avoid that whole issue I purchased the 6 speed manual, but that is a whole different story. Enjoy DTR

I have heard of everything from 10K miles to 100K before some of the stock clutches have failed. Again, those that have turned these trucks up have had more problems slipping the clutch, shortening the lifespan of the clutch. I personally put in a Dual Disk South Bend Clutch. Expensive, but expected lifespan of the clutch can be 200-500K miles. And it was rated to hold something ridiculous like 650-700 HP. But there is always a cost for such a long lasting clutch. The clutch pressure is more, and depending on pressure plate choice you can get a fairly stiff clutch pressure 3250, 3600, or 3850. The clutch requires upgraded hydraulics, not that expensive, but still an additional cost. Engagement is a little tricky, takes some getting used to. Sometimes requires double clutch in order to get it in first. But I am willing to sacrafice a little driveabilty for such a great clutch.
