More silencer ring & baffle stuff from a newbie
I was messing around with the truck this weekend and decided to see what all this intake baffle stuff was about.
After taking the intake tubes apart I noticed that the previous owner must have removed the “silencer ring” on the turbo, as it was already gone. Oh, the joys of buying a second-hand truck!
So, I started looking at the baffle, which was still there. I pried the glue seam apart, took the tube apart, and slid the baffle out. Since I might want to re-install the baffle at some time, I opted not to glue the tube back together. Instead, I drilled 4 small holes around the lip of the tube. I sealed the 2 parts of the tube with gasket sealer, and then used the 4 holes to screw the tube back together. Don’t know if it’s the right thing to do or not, but it seems to work pretty well and I can easily take it apart if I need to.
To be honest, after driving around I really didn’t hear the turbo any more than I did before (which is not very much). Not sure about performance yet, I need to drive a bit more to find out.

it looks like a really thin bracelet. no mistaking it. it needs to be pried out.
after trying a few miles w/o it. i found the constant whistle annoying. plus my common sense says airflow will be less turbulent with the ring in place.
i put it back in.
i have a pic at home.. if i remember ill post it up.

I should have said , it didn`t sound better ...to me. I was expecting to hear the turbo whine more , but the only thing I noticed was a "wooshing" sound. I could hear it most while on the highway , and it drove me nuts. It sounded like I was constantly on-off-on-off the throttle , even though I would just barely be touching it.

i just noticed you are new. i will explain , the ring serves to guide the air in a more efficient way for the turbine wheel the same for the baffles in the elbow they are straightening vanes to direct the air into the center of the turbo to reduce side shear and make it more efficient , some think that something like the afe stage 1 gives more air and it probably does but most let hot under hood air in and this drastically reduces compressor efficiency, if you want to play , the things you did so far did not hurt mpg much and did not drop your hp more than 2 or 3
