miles on stock 48 (how many)

I don't have that many miles on mine but I do tow a lot(usually 10,00 or less). I have been thinking hard about a tranny upgrade(vb & tc).
I have not slipped the stock one yet. There are not any wild upgrades.( I have an airaid, torque tube and a muffler delete). I am going to buy a xzt tow box (65 hp). Should I wait till I have tranny problems? How many mi/kms do folks have on the 48re stock with out problems?
Thanks
Joe

If I was in your shoes I would probly do it now rather than wait until I had problems, it would at least give me a bit mroe peace of mind when on the road. How many miles do you currently have on your truck?

60K plus with at least 70% towing 11K and not one bit of problems with the tranny. I installed the XZT around 7K miles on the truck.

I have amost 50,000 mi. now no problems so far. I just wondered how some of the higher milage 48's were holding up. Jheiser did you notice a big seat of the pants difference when you installed the xzt towbox?

Ive got just under a hundred grand on mine and its showing. Bit of slipping under high stress. Making me worry for sure. If you've got the cash, do it now.

I've got almost 60k with no problems at all....even with Smarty on Level 9. But I don't beat on it.

The stock tq converter is terribly ineffecient regardless, and needs to be replaced with a better unit.

mule3010,
It was a big kick in the pants but you can tell there is a difference. I have surprised a few people. I really like the fuel mileage I get when towing. That has been the biggest difference.

TexasCTD I agree with you - the stock TqConverter is the next thing to be replaced. I was reading in one of the mags that just changing out the tq converter can gain you big increase in mileage, life of tranny etc - it sold me on one (soon).

I don't do that much heavy hauling, but I do haul a 30ft enclosed car hauler a few times a year and a small tractor how and then. Stock tranny has 118k on it right now. No problems so far.

Yep, im going to get some upgrades too. Just not sure HOW far I want to go with it. I am tempted to just upgrade the tq converter and valve body. But if I decide to go all out with bombing....I prob need to go all the way and get it built right with billet shafts/flexplate etc. It is hard to let go of that much money though when the trans is not broke.

What service schedule has everyone been using? Drop pan/filter or flush?

My father has over 150k on his stock 03 QC DRW 48re. about 1/3rd of that pulling 10k-15k. he changes his transmission fluid and filter every 25k religiously.
he has had the transfer pump(lift), water pump, rotors, and a few other little things. it is completely stock 03 that uses delvac 1 motor oil every 10k and travels 700-1k miles a week.
