Maximum EGT's
The topic of EGT's came up in another thread, got me wondering.
With what I've done to my truck, the highest EGT's I've ever seen are when my truck was fully loaded for a fishing trip pulling my loaded 23 ft trailer up a steep hill in 6th gear. The highest I saw was 1250*.
Someone else suggested "MAX EGT's" will be higher than "towing EGT's", yet I've never seen anything higher.
When I crank up my BDTD and get into it on the street I never see anything hotter but that's only for short bursts.
So my question is under what conditions should my EGT's be higher than towing up that hill?

Where do you have your pyro probe installed? How heavy were you when towing that trailer (23ft is not that big) If 1250* is the highest you have ever seen, you have BDTD cranked... going up a hill and etc... you are doing too well. 04.5 and up engines can see 1400* stock. BDTD is known for some high temps too... something doesn't sound right.

Find a nice long hill and floor it in 6th gear at 70mph (with the truck unloaded). That's what I would consider "max" EGT's. If you do that same test while loaded down the EGT's will probably be higher, but I think most people take it easy while towing so they typically don't see the true max. I know I've never had mine even close to floored with a trailer hooked up.

My probe is pre turbo where most people suggest it should be (pic in my gallery). I just went and checked my gauge to be sure what I was talking about, and I was right, it hit just before the red on my gauge which is at 1250.
As for the hill, I was in 6th with the cruise set, kinda a macho thing to see if I could make it up in 6th, my old Ford 460 would be in 4th sucking wind pretty bad on that hill. I don't make a habit of towing with the cruise and 6th gear, just wanted to try it on that long steep hill. I normally gear down to 5th and go a little easier.
I've improved the breathing with a free flowing muffler and intake, and also am running a boost fooler. When towing with the cruise you can't really feel the pedal going to the floor like my old Ford with the "drive by wire" we have. I find watching the boost gauge is the only way to tell how hard the engine's working.
The trailer was loaded, watered up, beered up etc, estimate about 5500 pounds, the truck loaded as well including about 500 pounds of water, 2 boats, outboards, generator, chainsaw, you know, all the camping necessities!

Okay, thanks, that hill is about 150 miles away though and covered in snow now!
Winter gave a last blast (hopefully) to the interior of BC on the weekeknd.
I figured that was my max EGT's, I'll hafta experiment with a few of the more local hills...

Towing my toyhauler 11k loaded in 3rd gear up some pretty steep grades here in AZ I can see 1500* easily for several minutes. That's at a steady 2400 rpm. That's all stock, so I guess the computer still thinks that's ok. Iv'e never had it defuel on me.

On I-80 going towards Truckee towing my 7,000 pound flat trailer with rock-crawler combo, in tow/haul mode I have seen 1,400 more then once. I back it down a bit, I have already lost one turbo.

When I tow our 17K fiver, I live by the EGT gage. I can hit 1250 no problem. One time I was daydreaming and let it get to 1400 before I caught it. I try to keep it at or below 1250. Stock engine except for the AFE. Stock exhaust also. No black boxes.

I've easily hit above 1250 not paying attention. Some say you can tow at 1400 all day long, but personnally, I try to hold it to 1250. How steep was the grade and how fast were you travelling? Seems weird to me it doesn't get hotter. At the drag strip I saw 1500 once.. Ouch!! Just hammering down I can easily see above 1250. I would be a little leary that maybe your pyro is off slightly? I have both the Bully Dog pyro (4,5,6) and autometer pyro (1,2,3) so I have two sources to check my EGT temps.

Towing loads up to 13K I have never let the egt reach more than 1200, but I have seen 1800 at the track...but thats only for a second or two...they say aluminum starts to break down at 1300 degrees, so I try to stay lower than that when at all possible

My 03 ran cooler than my 06. The 03 would hit over 1250 easy towing up a hill. I can go over 1250 on the 06 with the BDTD on performance empty. I think something is wrong with your probe or gauge.

It's a long hill, like over 20 kms and my speed at the top was about 115 kph, or 70 mph
