LT285/75 R17 On my stock rims???

It has been suggested on this site that I could go to LT285/75 R17 tires. My stock tires are LT265/70 R17. I have checked with Costco and Americas Tire. Both of these retailers stock the tires but say it is against their store policy to install them on my truck. Costco said it was due to the liability created by the potential for the tires to scrape against the fenders. I don't want to raise my truck and would like to stick with the stock rims. I want larger diameter tires to reduce my RPM.

99.9% sure they will fit fine... maybe a little rub at full lock. Which tires does cosco carry in that size???

You can run them no problem. 315's will rub full lock on the inner track arms at full lock but there are no issues with the 285's I've got Toyo AT 10 ply in 285 on mine now with the hummer rims but have run them on stock rims too.

You won't have any problems going that big. The tire height is something like 33.83 not quite 34". That being said, I have this size TOYO MT now and, theyre great!

The salesman at Costco just ran it thru a non specific calculator and the numbers showed red so he said he couldn't sell them to me. They didn't show brand on the non specific calculator just the size.

To me the 285/75/17 is the perfect size tire for our trucks. Not to big to cause stress on the front end or cause additional load towing.....but big enough to look good and fill out the wheel wells some.

I downsized from 35'' Mud Terrains to Nitto Terra Grappler 285/75/17 all terrains, and I am very happy so far. Quiet, handle great, little better mileage.

As for where to buy.............Just go to Discount Tire. They have them in Sacramento. Why bother with costco etc. if they don't want your business? Discount tire will sell and install them no problem! And they will match anybody's deal. And offer free flat repair and rotations. What more could you ask?

Pics of my truck with this size tire in this post... https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/....html?t=249445

Sometimes their machines cannot handle tires that size. They will definitely fit with no problems though.
And I agree... Go spend your money somewhere else. There are many smaller shops that are desperate to get your money in this economy and will bend over backwards for it......

A member on this site (TCR) Dad has 285/75/17's on a 2wd. It's tight but doesn't appear to be a problem.

I would just go with the 285/70/17. Costco will carry that size and probably mount it.(I dont think BFG or Michelin has a tire in that size yet) I ran the Toyo OC 285/75/17 on my stock wheels on my 4x4 '04.5, fit was good, but the 3.73 axle gears, and the 48re tranny was a bad combo in my opinion. around town I had to run in Tow/haul mode to keep from lugging and jumping back and forth between 3rd and OD.

Did you have you ecm updated for the bigger tire size ? Mine shifted like garbage before I updated the Revs for the bigger size. Now it's just like stock, in town and the highway. 3rd to OD happens at 50mph, no problems with jumping between gears.

Well I had the ecm reflashed for 285/70/17, which was the biggest the dealer could go. I had no aftermarket programmer to recalc. for the true size of the toyos. So YES and NO. My problem wasnt that big of a deal, just didnt like the truck shifting in and out of OD while cruising around town. I will say that size is great for highway speed cruising.

Costco won't mount anything other than the size listed in their computer or on the door placard. They just flat out won't do it. Even if the tire you're trying to buy has the same load range and more capacity than stock.

Their loss! Sounds stupid to me. IF they won't sell it to me, i'll find a company that will. Already did, Discount tire.

Gotta pay money to join just so they can refuse to sell me a product. No thanks.

I was told that as well.

But now my BIL runs the tire center at a local Costco.
According to him, it's not a company policy, it's up to the individual manager's discretion.

He says he orders custom tires all the time, and that a good percentage of the cars they service have aftermarket wheels...nearly always larger than stock.

I agree that costco has some funny rules on tire mounting...however, it does matter which one you visit. My local costco said they would put 285/75/16 on my '98 as long as they were load range E. And on my wifes CRV, they said the tire had to meet certain speed and/or load ratings for them to mount them as well.
