Is this normal: when starting, and at idle my oil presure reads below 40 and just above the first black line if not right on the line. When Im driving down the road it reads normal. Is this ok?

 

Completely normal.

 

are you using an external oil pressure gauge, or the one in the dash?

the one in the dash is just an idoit light that moves... there is no lube oil pressure sensor on the engine... there is a 6psi lube oil pressure switch.. below 6psi then gauge reads 0psi, above 6psi, the gauge reads what the ecm wants to show...

all you can really count on it for is to know when it isn't reading 0, you have better than 6psi oil pressure... silly... they give us numbers on the cluster instead of L-H but it is a BS meter..
