loud ac noise at start
#18
Mine never made that sound till a few weeks ago, ac was ice cold until one day i noticed a leak, about a drop or 2 (red oily fluid) , watched it and traced it up to the compressor, maybe compressor oil, I know it will leak out gas too with it but i watched my leak for a good 10 days without any difference in cooling.
I have stopped using ac fearing a compressor failure. Haven't played with HVAC before.
Hopefully all your Ac's continue blowing ice

Compressor oil is not red, so it is not the compressor. It's tranny fluid or antifreeze.

Mine make this clunk from time to time. I was on the FWY yesterday, hit the AC button and heard a clunk. I was loud and scared me. Thought something was coming apart. I just don't want it to put me on the side of the road or go out right after the warantee is up.
This kind of noise on a mechanical part can not be good. I suppose it is good to hear that others have had this issue for a long time and no failure...

Nobody else has had any issues with the compressors. Hmmm, sounds like an installation issue to me. They may not have added any oil and prelubed (turned it) it before the install.

Sounds like the system is over charged to me!
Take it to a shop with good recovery equipment and see how much comes out and then put the proper amount back in.
More is not better in air conditioning.
In a nut shell you cant compress a liquid and when a system is over charged that is what the compressor is trying to do and of course will make a lot of noise.
Not normal and will fail in time

Mine has been doing the clunk since new.
Last weekend I check the AC pressure and found it was at the low end of the pressure operating range for the given ambient temperature, so bumped it up towards the high end of the range (low pressure side). The compressor hasn't clunk since adding the freon (yet)??

Mine has done the 'clunk' since new as well, also had the 'churp' at shutdown. When I was at the dealership a couple years ago, I mentioned both - they told me the 'clunk' was normal AC compressor stuff and that there was a TSB for the 'churp', so the fixed the 'churp' by changing out the alternator pulley. I have not had the churp since. Interestingly enough, I haven't had the 'clunk' since either.
