Lots Black Smoke, Sticking High RPMs

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, but hopefully I can get some good responses. I have read most of the existing threads, but have not come across any that are "identical" to my situation. First let me explain. I am not a mechanic, but very mechanically inclined (thanks to poverty,ha ha ha) and usually capable.

Here we go......... 2004 5.9L cummins dodge 2500....I was on my way to work one morning, when I passed another vehicle and let off of the pedal, I noticed the engine did not respond and just kept on going as if I never let off. It did this the next 10 miles to work. Bellowing black smoke (too much fuel?) and "sticking" throttle speed. I parked it for a little while, but when I tried to start it back up, it has to turn over several times before it will start. Idles okay, but if i give it a little fuel, It stays ramped up for 10 seconds or so and then idles back down. A maaaaannn does it smoke when I push the pedal!!! Don't want to drive it like this.

Have had a Bullydog on it 6 months for economy setting only!(sure helped out) It never once seen performance settings. When it started acting up, I took the program off, and it didn't change a thing. I have also checked lift pump, replaced EFA, checked fuel filter, air etc....

Please if any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sounds like your injectors are toast. If this is the case, I fully reccomend Don M at F1 Diesel... he repairs them at a very good price.

Any codes? Could be a timing or position sensor issue.

Sorry, there was a 0251 code which I believe is the EFA. That is the only code I have seen so far.

when rpm's hang and then come back down it is usually attributed to rail pressure NOT coming back down. a corrupt program(leftover), or sticking fca.

if you had a rail gauge, you would see the pressure staying at the cruising pressure, and not come down with throttle position or load..

Thanks, for the info. I meant that I changed my FCA. I was thinking it was a Electronic Fuel Actuator.
