I can afford to burn fuel @ $6 a gallon in my truck. I can and do afford to just hop in my truck and go for a ride for no reason whatsoever other than I just want to go somewhere. That's not the point. The point is it's aggravating to get a smart alleck answer like that just because someone might want to get a little better range out of their truck. With the exception of hotshotters in reality these trucks are a "want" not a "need". Most of us could all get by just fine without a diesel Ram. I don't really need this truck for a daily driver I could get by with a yugo. You don't really need that travel trailer why not strap pup tent to your back and hop on a bycycle? I drive a Ram because I want to. So quit ragging on a guy cause he wants to get better mpg's from his Ram..

 

I'm one who CAN'T afford a cheap gasser. My mileage average for every bit of driving I've done since getting the truck is a wee bit over 19mpg.

I get this by never hot footing it, rarely exceeding 1900rpm (about 67.5 says my GPS), coasting down whenever possible etc.

I am ALWAYS trying to up the average!!!!

 

Personally speaking, I bought mine out of need. I'm a general contractor that needs to carry tools, equipment and materials daily. The diesel option appealed to me for the 300,000mile interval between rebuilds. The fact that this vehicle is the best for towing is just a bonus. I am truly sorry I hurt your feelings with a dose of reality....NOT!

You're not hurting my feeleings but you are proving my point. You could do the same work with a gasser and a lot cheaper too. I see all kinds of gasser service and contractor work trucks many with several hundred thousand miles on them. You're just one of those contractors that "wants" a big bad diesel is all. But really I don't care what you drive or for whatever reason it doens't matter. We live in a free country and can drive whatever we please. So if a guy asks "how can I get more mileage from my Ram" stop and think how that is possible instead of suggesting he drive a Yugo like a smart alleck.

 

Can't we all just get along? I think we need a "group" hug here.

 

Milleage and a 7500 pound vehicle with the aerodynamics of a small house is counterintuitive. Even if say some one got 2 MPG better which is rare, the cost of whatever module or magic snake oil potion used to accomplish would far outweigh any gains. Just my 2 cents.

 

2mpg better would put my average near 21. That would be worth a MM module if I could afford to try one!

You could look at the smarty also. I have it set on 3 and have picked up 2.8 mpg. Not bad

 

Mike.... really?! this forum is for helping dodge and cummins owners find solutions to their problems, if you cant grasp that simple concept turn your computer off and go back to work were you (hopefully but not likely) might get something constructive done.

as far as the millage issue goes, there are a few things to check out. reading a diesel truck mag this weekend i read an article on the fitch fuel system and they claimed a 1.15 mpg gain on their (19mpg already) 12v. 300 bucks

the other thing i would really like to try is the elec fan. being in the hvac industry i know how much energy it takes to move air and our cummins require a lot of air movement. taking away that restriction will give you better milage. 600 bucks for the 2nd gen, not avial for the third gen yet.

so say you spend 300 how long to recoup?

avg 3rd gen millage being 17and fuel being 3.50 gal, your cost per mile would be 0.20 cents a mile

and using just the fitch at 18.15mpg, its 19 cents a mile

so it only saves you 0.01 cents per mile and at 30000 miles to recover that sounds like alot but if your most cummins owners you drive that much in a year so you have recovered in one year, and now you get 300 dollars of free fuel a year or three fill ups. and thats with one mod, find a few more low-buck mods and you can get save up to 10 fill ups a year.
