Looking to buy what should I be aware of?

As the title says i am looking to buy a newer model truck. I currently have a 01 and stumbled into the VP problem shortly after I bought it. I am hoping to, if possible, avoid major expenses when I buy this time. So what are some of the problems these 3rd gens have? Anything i should look for? I love the 6spd my 01 has but have been thinking about going with an automatic. How do these hold up? As far as performance mods go all i will do is intake exhaust and smarty.
Thanks

I have a 06 i have not had any problems out of it. But i have been told that if you put too much power to the 06 tranny it will not last. I have been told that the stock 06 tranny likes the truck stock. I am going to buy a ATS tranny just to be on the safe side hope this helps but doesn't keep you out of a newer truck you want....

If you "love" your 6 speed. Stay with stick. IMO less to worry about.

Ok so far

My 06 with auto tranny and 3.73 gears had been fine so far, only the little coolant drip on that little silver hose by the turbo is the only problem.

Its engine is stock with 35K but I have towed double-tow trailers for about 10,000 miles around Colorado in the mountains, so its been pulling some what.

I went with an auto transmission as the truck has other people drive it when we are ballooning, not all folks know how to drive a stick shift.

I would buy the truck again.

if you're going with the smarty, or any power adder, go with the six speed. the stock auto's dont hold up well with added hp or heavy towing.

like I said stock autos. ball joints and u-joints suck. you'll hafta replace them with better greasable ones.
some people have had trouble with injectors on the higher milage trucks.
