Looking at 2007 6.7 with 270,000mi. any concerns?
Like it says, im looking at an early 07 with 270,000 miles, 6spd, 4x4 QC dually. It has the 6.7 and appears all stock, even the exhaust. It starts and runs fine. even in the frigid Midwest weather. No engine lights, etc. I have no history on the truck. it appears like it may have been hauling campers/trailers from factories, to dealers. Body is straight, interior is good, just needs bath and detailed. I can pick it up for 9500$.
NADA rough trade in is $15,XXX. Clean retail is 17-20,000$. That seems high to me for the miles.
Any concerns, issues I should be aware of? this wouldn't be my first high mileage cummins, and the miles don't really scare me. Im just new to the 6.7. I understand it may need ball joints, wheel bearings, u-joints, but what truck wouldn't.
Thoughts, suggestions, honest opinions welcome. Thanks

Fire it up and check for blow by.
Also look down the oil cap fill hole and see if you can see the color of the injector nuts, wires and components around the injector.
If they are covered in a substance that looks like "licorice jello", RUN.
If it passes that, take it somewhere to check the fluids, if they are all full, look at the color, if they are slightly dark, the components aren't LEAKING badly, if the fluids are "like new" and the components show signs of seepage, beware because with leakage comes damage.
Pay particular attention to the transfer case and level, because the 271/273 transfer cases are notoriously under-capacity as it is and they tend to seep on the output seal at speed and show little sign of actual leakage when sitting.
I've replaced a couple of those transfer cases that were burned up and hardly showed a sign of leakage anywhere.
Mostly this is just common sense stuff I have mentioned.
Mark.

6.7deletes
I just bought an 07 3500 6.7 cummins and started to look into deletes as well only to find out that they don't make tuners anymore that will do deletes. I wish I knew that before I bought this truck because I would have bought one with a 5.9 cummins like my old truck!!!

If the EGR never malfunctioned and the oil was changed properly, there is no reason the 6.7 won't last as long as any other Cummins engine.
I'm less than impressed with them having the same basic fracture cap rods as a 5.9, on the 6.7s longer stroke, with the bigger bore and slightly heavier pistons, but it can't really be helped.
IIWM and I for sure wanted a long lived 6.7, I'd rebuild it with a 12/24 valve rod and do all of the deletes.

Well, I pulled the trigger, bought it. Flew out to Omaha, picked it up, drove 12 hrs home. No Issues.
I did stop and have the tires balanced. It has almost 280,000 now and only has 4800 hrs on the engine.
No codes, no "See Dealer" on the Overheard.
Shifts good, clutch seems tight. no oil leaks. I believe it was used to deliver trailers to dealers, so prob a lot of highway miles.
Engine has good Power. However, it needs a bath, inside and out.
Gonna work on the cosmetics and the deletes. Might be my new DD.

280,000 miles divided by 4800 hours, that averages to ~ 58mph, which pretty much says it was primarily long trip miles.
That's a good scenario.
Idling is what loads up the DPF and long trips are better on these trucks than stop and go.

Ya, found some oil change receipts and stuff. looks like he was doing around 10,000 miles a month. More driving than I care for. Just took the seats out, pulled the covers to wash them. Pulled the carpet out to clean it, then the rest of the interior. Then giving the out side a through cleaning. Then moving to servicing and doing the deletes.
