Look at my trans filter

I replaced the gov. solenoid, pressure switch, and filter today. I was surprised at the amount of gray sludge I found. Is this normal wear.
The truck has 50k miles and I had the trans fluid replaced at 30k miles. This is the original filter with 50k miles.

BTW, the light throttle shift is perfect now.

I am doing this same deal this weekend. My Gov sol and switch have tossed codes for the past 6 weeks or so. The black stuff is clutch material and looks fairly normal based on what I have seen in other transmissions. This is why I never recommend to anyone to get a trans "Flush". It just pushes all that garbage through the entire trans.

Glad to read it shifts well.

My filter did not have that much on it, but the pile around the magnet was about the same I had. I have changed mine 2 times (I'm at 46k) and both time I had metal.

Edit: Actually after looking closer at the secind pict. Mine seemed to be more fine than yours. Do you haul very heavy?

I will say typical. I had similar metal on the magnet at 20K but almost none at 40K so most of those fines are break in debris.

I just did my 3rd change at 60,000 and I had the really fine powder type on my magnet, nothing on the filter. I can't remember the first change if I had those big chunks of metal on my magnet. Those are kind of large shavings. Maybe I had them... I did the first change at about 6,000 miles.

There were no big chunks or anything that felt gritty. The camera flash makes it look like metal chunks. It felt like sludge. At 30k the dealer said a filter change was not necessary. I bit my lip and said ok. I think I'd be better off changing the filter myself every 30k and top off the fluid.

BTW, I have added 6 qts of fluid and it just at the bottom of "ok" range on the dipstick. How much do I need to add after dropping the pan?

Also, I tow a 8k trailer about 4k miles a year. This is the first time the pan has been off and there's about 10-12k miles worth of towing.

I want to say mine took like 6.5 quarts... But I have a really bad memory... I need to write all the capacities down in my little excel spread sheet I got for my truck.

Your memory is real close. That's about what I added when I installed this part a week or so ago.. I can tell a difference in the way it shifts now

You may want to install a drain plug in the pan for future fluid changes

Any change in shift points after the GM Soleniod Conversion? Mine seems to shift later (higher rpm's).

I can't really tell if it shifts any later. Did they happen to tell you that . If the solenoid in this part goes bad. That the solenoid can't be replaced ? Looked like it just bolted in

Hector,

You remember how much the Transfer case took? I want to say it was just under 2 quarts?

My memory isn't very good either. I'm guessing 3 qts

Hi bansh-eman

The transfer case... both the NV271 and the NV273 takes a little over 2 quarts of ATF+4 transmission fluid.

I don't know how, but I get 8 - 9 quarts in my trans when I change fluid. Maybe I let it drain longer. Maybe I have the wrong dipstick
