I have an 03 too with the same deal. I changed the fuel filter and it reduced the crank time for about two days and now it's back.

Yeah same here. I've been looking into this for a while now and found that it could be injectors or lift pump or the ECM or something else.

Every thing that Ive read, leads to the lift pump. keep us updated.

could be injector(s) leaking down- also pressure relief valve could be going out.

hey man..........my truck started doing this 6monthes ago it goes along with my injector problem l beleave
happends When warm with my cummins
take 3-4seconds blows smoke runs normal but bit fat.
to be honest l'm turning a blind eye to it becasue my current repair bill is 2Grand!!! l dont wana know how much the injectors are gona cost l got one step higher then the RV injectors

2003s have problems with the injectors. eventually the truck wont start. have a injector return volume test done.

you will need miller tool 9012 to seperate the pump return from injector return on the back of the filter housing unless you take the fitting off the back of the head and make your own tool/hose. start the truck up warm, and let idle for one minute the amount from the injectors should not be over 180 mL.hope this helps
