Long Cranking Starts
MY 03 2500 CTD HAS 70,000 KM
IT TAKES A LONG TIME CRANKING OVER B4 IT STARTS.
IT STARTED THIS TWO WEEKS AGO. THEN ONE DAY UP @ WORK I SHUT IT OFF AND WOULDN'T START ANYMORE. LUCK FOR ME I COULD PULL START IT & IT WOULD RUN FINE.
THE DEALERSHIP TOOK IT & THEY CHANGED A NO GOOD INJECTOR AND 2 BROKEN VALVE COVER BOLTS.
I GOT IT BACK YESTERDAY AND THE STARTS STILL SEEM TOO LONG. IS THIS THE START OF LIFT PUMP PROBLEMS?????
JUST AS A NOTE I DRAIN MY FUEL SEPARATOR EVERY FILL & CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER EVERY 3000K. I ALSO HAD THE DEALERSHIP FLUSH THE FUEL SYSTEM.
I HAVE ONLY HAD THE TRUCK 8 MONTHS AND ITS BEEN IN THE SHOP 3X'S

find another dealer , they should haved figured that out before returning the truck to you. just maybe you could be sucking air or fuel is draining back. either way , should not be that hard to find.

The day I brough my truck home from being "fixed" it had a long start then it sat for less than 2 days now it wont start just cranks.
This if my first diesel I'm not afraid to say I don't know much but I want to learn ,especialy seeing as it's like the dealership only wants to help lighten my wallet. So please forgive my lack of knowledge and experience but my learning is now begining.
I drained the fuel filter canister and pulled the filter, turned the key on the lift pump seems to flow fine I let it pump with the drain open then I put another new filter in closed the drin & let it fill again.
Then I loosened 4 injector lines right off the top of the the common rail but not the 1 off the front or the 1 off the back. (This is the common rail right)
Now when I crank some fuel comes out the four hole but not much.
How much should come out how much pressure should there be?
Is the pressure different during stars than while running?
So now I put the lines back on and disconected the line that feeds the common rail.
(this comes from the inector pump at the front of the motor???
Now cranking again some fuel but not that much fuel from this line.
I want to find out whats wrong with my truck so I can ask the dealer to fix it. I need my truck for work not sitting at the shop.
Where & how do I learn more.

The pressures involved with the common rail can kill you. Loosening the lines on the system really has no diagnostic value here. What needs to be checked is lift pump volume, crank signal and fuel rail setpoint vs actual psi readings which require the DRB scan tool. I would also be checking the pressure limiting valve, but there again just like the lift pump some special tools are required.

Can you please fill out your "signature" so everyone knows what year, options, mods you have.
Try getting the codes out of the computer by turning the ignition switch on/off/on/off/on and leave it on. The computer's diagnostic codes will appear in the odometer window. Post them when you get them.

Rail can't build pressure if there is even a minor leak. That's why not much came out.
Make sure you're HPC (High Pressure Connector) retainer nuts are all tight (the large nut that screws into the cylinder head, then the injector line screws into the HPC). If you can turn one even 1/4 turn, it was leaking.
You'll need crow's feet sockets to tighten them all. Even then, some of them are hard to get to.

This may sound stupid, but are your batteries fully charged? If you can pull start it, but it won't start with the key I would be thinking the problem is electrical.
