Lift Pump Symptoms

What are the symptoms of a lift pump going out? I just installed a Quad commander and am getting 2 psi at idle! I am about to change my fuel filter this afternoon to see if it helps, since it has been almost 15 K, but lots of highway miles, so lots of fuel going through it I am thinking.

The truck starts fine and runs fine. I think I am starting to lose some power, but other than that, no problems.

I am just wondering if it will make any noise, rattling or anything like that, or if low fuel pressure is really the only diagnosis. Thanks guys.

Funny you mention that, I just had my lift pump go out at 90k miles on Monday. It just died going down the road. It gave no symptom other than throwing a code when it died. P0628 was the code. Was replaced under the cummins 100k warranty. New lift pump is now in the fuel tank.

Yeah, I am 19,000 out of warranty, so I hope it aint going out. I want a GDP Walbro kit, but dont have the money right now. I guess I'll just pull out the visa.

Anyone know where I can get a cheap stock LP for the time being? And I mean cheap! Thanks.

The total bill would have been $390 for the part and labor if warranty wouldn't have picked it up. $224 for the pump.

One more thing I noticed this morning. My truck was starting to take a few seconds to start but this morning (first morning since I recieved my truck back) it popped off instantly.

I would have gave you mine. I just upgraded to the GDP kit before coming over here and I sold the old pump. Cheap. I love the GDP kit. Good luck. The kit is really simple if you end up getting it.

Here is a link to a thread with a video of what mine is doing. It looks like I am going to need a new lift pump also.

Going to talk to the dealer today.

I just replaced the sending unit for my Commander. I did just like you, first changed the filter. I called quad and talked the Roak. I told him the truck ran good and started good, so he sent me a new sending unit. Replaced unit and all is well. Bad sender was reading 0 to 1 at idle but would increase to 7 at about 60 mph.

Now the unit is reading 8 to 9 at idle which is like before the pressure readings dropped. He said if the truck is running ok then I should change the sender before doing the pump.

You can always do a fuel volume test.

Well. mine reads 1-2 at idle, and 0-2 while under a load (normal driving conditions), so I am leaning towards Lift Pump. I bought this unit used, and it showed good fuel pressur readings for the previous owner. IT may vary well be a bad sender, but with 119,000 miles, and looks to be stock LP, I'd be willing to bet that is the culprit. Thanks for the help though. Where would I go to get a fuel volume test done? Thanks again everyone for all your help.

FWIW....I have not had ONE issue with an in tank fuel pump on the diesel trucks, whether it's a newer than 05 that was born that way, or a retrofitted one. I do A LOT of retro fittings under warranty.

...well maybe one "failure". A used car lot in L.A. wasn't sure what the extra fuse holder was at the drivers battery on a retrofitted one so they cut it off. Surprisingly that truck drove over 200 miles before it died and was towed in to me.

Fuel volume test: Now I have not done this so someone can correct me if this is wrong. Basicily Your pump should pump at least 45 ounces of fuel in about 25 seconds. Try the drain on your filter and do the key bump but do not start ( just like priming when you replace your filter) catch the fuel in a container and see how much you have. Something like that.

good luck
