lift pump problem?

Recent no start problems, change fuel filter and starts fine, progresses to long crank times until no start again, change filter again, same deal 4 x.

Suspected restricted fuel pick up, weak transfer pump.

Installed in line 12v elect pump between tank and filter for added security before recent 2000 mile trip, and used OEM filter thinking poss bad filters.

1400 miles form home, same deal again no start.

Dealer says overflow valve first, then go for transfer pump.... but they dont sell the overflow valve just a new injection pump...

Cummins says, never heard of a bad overflow valve causing that, sounds like transfer pump, but they dont sell it and dodge no longer uses external mount pump and now goes in tank due to recent problems. So get one from dodge.

talk about a circle jerk, deaerl wants 390 for transfer pump and I dont know if thats whats wrong.

My question is if its a weak transfer pump shouldnt the pusher pump compensate for it, it dont seem so since i have the same problem still.

any ideas on what might fix me (least expensive)

It could be the lift pump. The dealership should be able to do a flow test on the pump itself.
But when the engine is running does it run fine? If it does possibility of one or more leaky injectors that's not letting the CP3 pump build enough rail pressure for starting the engine.

Just got my truck back this morning, had a similiar problem long crank / hard start.
Installed new fuel filter still long crank,
Dealer did volume flow test on lift pump, said it was borderline, installed intank pump.
Still long crank, checked injectors and found #6 leaking replaced injector and seems to be good now (started 3 times since this morning).
Keeping my fingers crossed.

If you put a pusher pump on the truck without bypassing the old one it won't flow through it if it is bad. Best bet is to upgrade to aftermarket kit such as Glacier for about $400. Injector can also cause that, but more likly the lift pump. Take off fuel filter lid and check flow to filter. Are you still under warranty or are you expired?

dropped fuel tank and cleaned out fuel pick up, lines and tank, found quite a bit of trash in pick up assy, but did not seem like enough to be causing my problems then removed and cleaned what I think was the overflow/ press relief valve on injection pump....

re installed everything and now it fires right up every time... but like every time before, this seems to work for about 2-3 tank fulls, but this is the first time to drop and clean the tank, I guess we will see what happens.

Thanks for all the help, I will keep you posted, If you have any other suggestions, keep em comming
