not sure about the coolant, but on my 06 the water pump went out at 61,000

 

Life of the water pump (seal) is going to be directly proportional to the quality/maintenance level of the coolant. They will fail pretty quickly in an engine where cooling system maintainance lacks for one reason or another. Debris accumulates in the flow and eats away at the seal.

 

99k and just put my second one on. leaking at the shaft seal. pump was $50'ish at NAPA

 

Mine leaked at 51k and was changed by myself. The coolant had been changed 1yr previous with the HOAT applorved stuff, don't think it is related to a "coolant" issue. It is related to a bad bearing and then it takes out the seal. Wobbeling impeller and then good bye seal.

Replaced it with a NAPA one for under 50$. The genuine cummins one was about 2x the money, it will not last 2x as long/

 

If this is true I would think mine would last a long time. I drain and refill (no flush) my coolant every 20K miles. It replaces about 4.5 gallons of the fluid and keeps it, I think, like new all the time. I replace with new Zerez G-05 and Distilled water.

The problem with coolant maintenance regardless of how often you drain/flush is the muck and debris is constantly accumulating and draining/flushing doesn't do a very good job of removing it.

 

BILL PLOCK did a nice write-up with pics on another site on the installation of a spin-on coolant filter (on a Ferd, but would work on most anything).

I use factory-spec coolant, and old favorite, RADIATOR MASTER RMI-25 additive. Filter yet to come.

 

Do you have a link to that article? I believe 'Ace' has a coolant filter already, IIRC....right Ace? But his is a custom build I think.

The only even slightly difficult part of getting a coolant filter installed on one of these 3rd Gens is finding a place to mount the filter head. There's plugs on the rear of the head where the heater feeds off. The high-perf guys are tapping in there to relieve water jacket pressure and increase coolant flow to the back of the block. Lots of good reasons to install a coolant filter, just find a place to mount it and plumb the lines. Too easy.

TexasCTD, don't know if you've been to the Royal Gorge before, but it is a cool tourist spot. Nice place to visit. We're up north of Denver, probably about 200 miles out of your way....

 

Bad bearing/ leaking seal at 47,ooo. It costs 70$ @ orielly's with life time warranty and easy to change with only small lacerations to hands.

 

Is everyone draining the radiator before changing the pump?

 

this is "ALL" i did prior to changing the water pump out on my trk. i just drained into 2, clean 5 gal. buckets(used 2 so not to deal with FULL bucket of coolant). there will be a "very small" amount that will spill out when the pump is removed.
i reused the coolant that was drained. some may choose to refill with fresh coolant.

 

I've put two on my truck now. The original lasted about 100k and the 2nd (A Napa pump) lasted another 115k. I just put on the third one two weeks ago. The original pump started leaking badly to a point that I was leaving a puddle. The 2nd one was just barely leaking and I noticed it while under the truck. I put another Napa part on. Install took about 30 minutes, 15 of which was draining and refilling the coolant. Easiest pump I've ever changed

 

Thay'll last a half million miles or more if you run a coolant filter.

 

169k before mine went.
