knocking from engine when put into gear??
I am hearing a knocking noise in the engine compartment when my truck is put into gear. It seems to idle smooth while in neutral. Any idea's as to what the problem is? I will take it to the dealer, but I need to have some idea as to what it may be. If they scan the computer- will a code come up even though the engine light is not on? Thanks

No code will come up. They'll be able to do a injector cancel and find which cylinder is the noisy one. Most likely you have carbon build up on the injector tip and that is hindering the spray pattern making that one cylinder.....sound like a diesel. I would run some power service or Standyne diesel treatment through the system first. I've put quite a few injectors in trucks that get "babied" around. The harder the engine gets worked, they fewer injector probs I've seen.

My truck does the same thing , and I put Power Service in and it helps alittle. Will just get worse? I have 41,000 miles on my truck, what should I do? Do you put power service in every tank? Will that hurt if you put to much in?

Mine was just in the dealer for a week for the same thing.. They didn't find anything wrong (go figure).. I ran a tank of Lucas fuel additive and it quieted done some This tank I have tired power Service White bottle and ran the double dose as prescribed by the bottle for injector cleaning and it is real quiet now back to sounding new.
BTW mine only has 3000 miles on it but I spen 1/2 hour on the freeway to go 7 miles 5 days a week...

Try advancing the tone ring as described in the crankshaft sensor post. It definatley help tone down my knock at idle. I've tried everything else I could think of and this was the only thing that made the slightest difference so far.

I have an 06 auto that is doing that. It is a lot louder when in gear versus park or neutral. Someone else replied not a big concern but it is way louder than my 03 6-spd which I don't think should be that way.

26k on mine and I had that happen to mine also. Mine occurred when I was out of town hunting and poured in some Diesel Kleen that I purchased @ the filling station. I had been using Standyne. When I got home, I poured in the Standyne, it went away> Since using the Standyne, has never came back. One guy told me that the extra Cetane can cause this.
