Knocking in engine 03 cummins
I took the truck to get my nephew in the truck this afternoon, it ran fine on the way there, I stopped and loaded him up and started the trip home a whopping 1 mile. After turning out of the parking lot and accelerating for approx 1/3-1/2 mile, a loud knocking started in the engine compartment, with lots of white smoke from the exhaust, I immeadiately stopped the truck as soon as it was safe at the top of a hill and checked the following.
Oil, Clean and full about 1k before oil change, running Cummins premuim blue synthetic.
Edge EZ, removed from the truck. (no change in running)
Replaced fuel filter, no water in the fuel and the water in fuel light was not on. Fuel filter had 7k miles on it. This tank of fuel has 160 miles on it.
Started the truck and got it rolling down the hill to my house.
Anytime the engine is run there is a loud knocking and white smoke pouring from the exhaust.
All Vital fluids are full and clean, I can not see any leaks anywhere on the undercarriage. Anyone have an idea on what left the building? Injector?

What a bummer. How many miles on the truck?
Anyhow, if you are going to replace them anyway, I suppose a set of Mild aftermarket ones that claim better fuel mpg would be my choice...
Also, I see these were your first posts. Welcome.

I hear you on being 1 mile from home as opposed to being out in the miiddle of nowhere. Kind of Ironic though. I will check in with the dealer on Monday, they should be able to run the VIN and let me know what warranty coverage is still active correct?

Could you explain this a touch better? Do you mean run the engine and feel each injector? What am I trying to determine when checking the injector? Is the knock coming from the injector? Kind of a noob when it comes to the diagnosis on a diesel.

I think I'd wait to even touch it until you figure out if it is still under warranty...
Even if it is just slightly past on time, maybe the dealer guy can go to bat for you and get part of it covered. I'd guess you may have to show receipts for fuel filters, though.

What he said ^^^^ However if you have a injector knocking you can sometimes feel it on the side of the cylinder wall. My buddies 7.3 dropped one and you could definetly feel it while the truck was running

Let the exhaust manifold cool completely off and fire it up. Give it a couple stabs with the accelerator and feel the exhaust manifold at each cylinder port. The one that is the hottest will be the one over fueling causing the white smoke.
