knocking\bad rattle in motor

Need some help, My truck has been running fine until I started it this afternoon. When I started it it sounded like a 2nd gen truck it has a bad rattle comming from the cyclender area it sounds like the old diesel rattle. I ran it hard once and it went away for about 1\2 mile the came back again when you put it under a load like letting the clutch out it gets really load what could it be and is it dtill safe to drive. also the rattle seems to go away in the hi rpms when driving but comes back at idle help!

I read here that some have loose injectors, and they cause a a noise like you are having.

Could be fuel related. When was the last time you filled up or changed fuel source?

I really don't think that it is bad fuel this noise is definately louder than that. It is similar sounding of the power stroke but much louder. my neibor came out from his house and said it sounded really bad and loud. If i let the clutch out in gear holding the brake it is rattling like a 2nd gen and maybe louder that that to. and it will go away for a short time if i run through the gears hard but will come back in 10 to 15 min later. baseically it sounds like my old 24valve but smooths out in the higher rms and then goes back to rattling at idle.

It does sound like an injector problem. Try an additive and see if it helps.

local601, I have the 03 HO 6spd, mine does this also, but not all the time. When i start out in 2nd it will "CLACK" really bad till rpms raise a bit. Very annoying and a bit embarrasing. I checked my injectors and they seem tight. Sometimes it wont do it, sometimes it will. This past year I changed fueling stations to a high volume truck stop using a "Premuim" fuel and never got the "CLACK,CLACK,CLACK" Prices there went way high so i changed to a different truck stop (shell) and the "CLACK" is back (SOMETIMES),if I use a fuel from our local supermarket station, the "CLACK" is real bad. I've also used the Shell fuel supplemnt and it seemed to help. One thing is for sure on mine, when the engine is cold it is 90% more quiet than normal operating temps.

Lots of people are reporting this noise but I have not heard of a solid fix or what is causing it. Please let us know if you end up taking it in.

Chris

thanks for the input guys. I did take it to the dealer and of course the rattle quit. w/o having the noise to hear they said not much they could do. and they had not a clue what it would be. they did put the computer on it and know codes came up so that was good. I guess I will wait till it happens again. thanks

If you did have a mechanical problem the noise will not come and go. Bearings and rods don't fix themselves overnight. I would suspect fuel or injector issues.

I took my truck on a 130 mile round trip for the first time since I got it,I noticed I have a clatter while trying to keep the speed constant,it clatters for a few seconds then goes away,it sounds like colapsed lifters but it only does it while lightely pressing the fuel pedal to keep speed constant,no problems it just isnt something I have ever heard before,I can't compare it to the 2nd gen. because they were loud and I never noticed it before.
It only lasts for a few seconds then goes away,it isnt a vibration,it is smooth as silk.

Dave65,
Mine does the same thing and i'll be dammed if I can figure it out. It must be normal though cause the truck runs great. After years of listening to my '96 everything sounds different on the new ones. If you ever figure it out let me know.

I sure will,I think your right we are so use to hearing the clatter of the 2nd gens, and these are so quiet you hear one thing and you think something is wrong.
Someone told me these valves on these trucks are self adjusting and that is what I am hearing, but I am not so sure this is true.

I was hoping that someone would have an answer to this problem. I think my truck is the same. The standard diesel engine noise is fairly obvious from inside, but the clatter is louder than that. Mine does it all the time, and it can be heard the best at light throttle around 1500-2000 RPM. It sounds like lifters out of adjustment. To me it sounds like it comes from the right side of the engine. My truck is completely stock. I want to take it in to the dealer, but I feel like I am worrying about every little thing since the truck only has 800 miles on it.
