K&N Air Filters

What's the consensus on them, do they really improve mileage and air flow over the standard type air filters?

Just looking for opinions.......Thanks.

They definitely improve airflow.

However, airfilters are not rocket science. You either have good filtration at the expense of flow or good flow at the expense of good filtration.

KN has good air flow, but have reputation of letting other things in that are bad for your engine.

To me, the benefit does not outweigh the possible elimination of your engine warranty.

I thought that too, but is the problem the filter, or are people not cleaning them often enough? I know I change my Wix almost every oil change. It looks pretty dirty after 15K.

bigblock2stroke summed it up pretty good.
There have been problems with the seal on some.

The gauze type filters have too many big holes in them to filter properly on an engine that requires as much air as the cummins. A dirty K&N works better at filtering because the holes get blocked which then allows smaller particales to be trapped. Some guys clean them too often.

If not oiled properly (over oiled) the extra oil can be sucked into the intake and ruining your A.I.T sensor. The extra oil can also stick to the inside of the innercooler making it less efficient.

If under oiled they will not trap particales properly.

I have also heard of them destroying the M.A.P. sensor.

Some guys have had no problem running them, Most guys have thrown their in the garbage.

Don't waste your money on a K&N or an AirRaid. They both will run you about 400 for a cold air intake. Check out Racers Choice. Half the money and they look great

I have been

running the k&n on my dads truck 40K and my new truck with no problems whatsoever. Makes the turbo sing and surely flows better.

I bought the cone type filter with the tube replacement and heatshield off ebay for 189.00 shipped to me

From having two, I think they are great.

I ran one. I noticed it was not getting dirty so I checked the tube and there was dirt in it. Go with an AFE PG 7 if you're gonna use a filter that is oiled. Mine does not let dirt in and my boost didn't drop any from K&N to AFE.

I know a lot of people that have them on the older trucks and have no problems. The reason they have problems with the new trucks is because of the higher boost. They suck a lot more air than the 1st and 2nd gen trucks.

I agree that they probably work fine if you are cleaning and re-oiling with every fuel filter change.

I still don't think the marginal benefit is worth potentially voiding your warranty unless you already have given up on the warranty or you are in tight with your dealer.

The following is from a page on the Cummins website I printed 12/05/03.

"Does Daimler Chrysler authorize the use of high-flow aftermarket air filters such as K&N with my Cummins engine?"

"No. Daimler Chrysler and Cummins do not recommend the use of increased-flow air filters such as K&N because they can allow contaminants into the intake that can ruin an engine (scoring the sides of the pistons, etc)."

If you decide to use a filter of this type, repeat after me. I am my own warranty station.

I thought Airaid trapped finer particles than K&N? I know that it does have an extra synthetic layer. I have no dirt in the tube after running mine.
