just got my clutch installed....

I have a few questions; its clapping when engaged in neutral (makes the truck sound like old 12V) is this normal with a larger dual disk clutch? Also I know it’s breaking in but it shutters when engaging, is this normal while breaking in? So far I love it but the guys that installed it told me it was the input shaft on the transmission. I called enterprise where I got it from they said that this is normal with the clutch to make this noise when engaged in neutral. For some reason I feel sketch about the noise just want to make sure this is all ok.

From what I have heard that is completely nomal, and basically the only downside to a dd besides the price. If you dont mind tellin me how much was the clutch installed? Pm me if you dont want it posted public.

With tax and shipping it was $1500 then $450 installed. I was hoping that buying a nice clutch wouldn’t have any stupid side effects like that. I just hope it’s chattering as much when it’s broken in, plus I hope it starts engaging a little more smoothly.

Please keep us posted on the chatter issue. I would not expect any properly working clutch to chatter, could be a little oil or grease from a finger print on one of the friction surfaces. Mild chatter probably will not reduce the life of the clutch but is miserable for drivability. My stock 04.5 clutch has impressed me with it's smooth operation. If or when have to replace it I would hate to give up that smoothness.

Jim B

Maybe I misunderstood your comment. Is the chattering you hear the gear noise in the transmission at idle. I jumped to thinking that the chattering was a rough or lack of smooth engagement when starting from a stop.

My PU does have the gear noise rattle at idle in neutral with clutch engaged.
It did not do it when it was new, and like you say it makes the truck 2-3X noisier than with the clutch disengaged.

Regards,

Jim B

Yes everything you said is normal. These are side effects of being able to hold the HP. The rattle is opposite of most DD in that this one rattles with the trans in neutral with the clutch engaged instead when the clutch pedal gets pushed in. As for the chatter it will get somewhat better but will never be like stock. Once you get the clutch broke in drive it hard a couple times(3000 RPM holeshots) this will help it smooth out a little. I had the same misconceptions that the DD clutch were like stock just able to hold more power. On everyday driving just rev it up more upon take off to make it smoother.
