Impossibly Hard to Shift NV5600, Other Times Shifts Fine
Not sure where to start on this on.
Trans=NV5600 (Original 95,000 miles) Fluid changed 20K miles ago with Amsoil
Clutch=SB FE Single Disk (70,000 miles) No slippage at all.
Clutch Hydraulic=Stock (original 95,000 miles)
Shifter=BD Short Shifter
At times.....hot or cold, it will NOT go into 1st or 2nd at a stop, or when slowing down and need to down shift into 2nd or 3rd. Its like hitting a solid brick wall...it just will not shift into those gears. So I go to 4th or 5th and have to slip the clutch, and try not to get t-boned in turns or other similar situations.
Other times, it will go into the gears, but still feels like I have to use more effort than before to get into the gears.
There are zero noises coming from the clutch. The clutch pedal has about 1/2-3/4 inch freeplay at the top of the travel. The pedal isn't mushy.
Where do I start with this????
I'm about to open up the PTO cover and take a peak inside the tranny, and service the tranny oil. I was going to wait until the 100K mile mark, but its getting worse.

sounds like synchros. if you can't engage the gear that's likely the case.
Could be detents or a number of other things in the box also.
I would suggest paying someone to do two things:
1. do a rebuild on your tranny (ouch!)
2. replace the clutch cause you can, while you're at it.
Nobody is going to know without tearing into the box, I would venture a guess.
Good luck...

Get upgraded Hydro's from South Bend Clutch and its probably time to change the fluid.
The stock hydro's in the 3rd gens are ok for the stock clutch but anything else I would recommend upgrading.
When the hydraulics are weak you will not be able to get the trans into gears very easily without force or manipulation.
On another note the NV5600 by nature is a notchy transmission probably because it's built like a brick you know what
On another note: Even with upgraded hydro's I often push the shifter into 3rd gear (with the clutch pushed in at a stop) before I select my desired lower gear, this will help with getting the synchro's in line.
I would'nt let anyone touch that NV5600 unless you have exhausted all other avenues.
PS, let us know how it turns out.

My NV would sometimes do that. Switching to Redline MTL seemed to help.
It eventually quit doing it. About the time it quit, I remember getting the clutch a bit hot backing a trailer up a steep uphill turn to get into a spot (too lazy to grab low range), so I wonder if it was a little glazed or whatever and abusing the clutch slightly once in a while might have helped.
Anyway, did this show up about the time you did the fluid change?

It started all of the sudden one day. Went to downshift, the tranny said..."EH NO!".
For example, yesterday towing the two jet-ski's, worked fine all day. One the way home from Lake Mead, stuck in rush-hour traffic, creaping along. I put in neutral. When I went to put it into 2nd to take off..NOPE! Pumped the clutch...went in but hard. Then it was fine again until 3 or 4 stops again. Went into 2nd, but when I went to 3rd, didn't want to go in.
The fluid was last changed about 20K miles ago.
Before I let anyone, touch the tranny......the local Dodge dealer would have it in trade.

Mine does it once in a while as well, only when trying to get it in from a stop. I just quickly blip the throttle with the clutch pushed in, just a really quick one, goes right in easily then.

If mine ever gets too notchy to go into gear (Rev is normally the worst for me), I'll throw it in 4th (always goes in easy) and then slide it over into the gear I want... If its still locked up, back to 4th let the clutch grab a bit and then throw it in gear... Nature of the mighty NV and DD clutch.
