So if you go in for a repair and your average speed is 30 mph do you jack up the rear of the truck set the cruise at a 100 mph and wait till your truck comes in appliance.

Mechanical tachs with hour meters generally are only accurate in the hours department when the engine is running at normal operating speed (PTO speed in tractor speak). The newer hour meters run off of 12 vdc. I have one tractor that puts hours on the meter as long as the ignition switch is on, even if the engine is not running. Guess how I found that out.

Oneof my tractors is a 2000 model the other is a 05.Both hour meters only run with engine running and at idle move very slow.The higher the RPM the faster they click over.At 2350 rpm there clicking over pretty quick.But their diffently not actual run time.

What am i doing wrong? I push the button in and hold. Then I turn the key to the run position without starting the truck. It goes through the lamp check, then C COde 00 00 then back to normal ops????

Begining to think there is some type of fix going on. Most have reading around 32-38 average. Just checked mine.

16558 miles, 438 hours 37 avg. Now I know I do have over 6000 miles highway pulling my 5th wheel and sure averaged well over 60 mph doing that. Can't believe that my local driving has ruined my average that much.

Oh well....Thats my numbers.

I got 89,500 miles and 3145 hours. You do the math , 28.45,( its less than 35mph avg.) The truck has been taken care of and i certainly wouldn't consider it severe duty, but thats just me.

Never really thought to check, none of my other trucks had the hr meter.

18729 miles @ 505 hrs = 37.08 mph avg.

Guess I'm safe so far....

So, my average(28) is below the 35 mph average set by Cummins which means my truck is severe duty...From spring to fall I pull heavy landscape trailers pretty much everyday and sometimes during that time I will never get above 50 mph due to my stops being in town not far from each other. I also tow a heavy travel trailer at least once a month from March to November. It also tows my boat at least 3 times a month. I bought my truck for the power and mileage(compared to a gasser). Other than that its my daily driver. I dont live in a rural area, so long daily trips dont happen that often.

Am I "hurting" my truck using it like this, or is this avg. mph stuff just hype and nothing to really worry about?

122,934 miles. 4048 hours. 30.369 mph.
I use a remote start and always try to let my truck warm up for about 10-15 minutes. I'm sure that has not helped my average speed but I think that has helped extending the life of my engine.

Yeah, I don't know about it being 'hype' if Dodge believes it enough to invalidate a guy's warranty claim but from my experience I think that once the engine is up to temperature it doesn't make much difference how far or what RPM it's run; as long as it's not lugged or over-revved. There was a study done by an ag guy on when the most wear occurs in an engine and he determined that it was during the start/warm-up cycle. He also deduced that the important thing is to get it to 140 deg. as soon as possible .... something to do with moisture evacuation, clearances, etc. ..... I think you're fine though you may only get 950,000 out of it instead of a million miles.
