Idle noise

Now before you guys start making jokes at this i'll tell you that im a diesel mechanic. I noticed for the first time today that my truck started making a terriable ticking or knok. It has never sounded like this before at a idle. The mileage is just about at 30,000 and I just wanted to know if anyone else is hearing the same noise.

Does it do this at idle under a load? Or under no load?

It could be the clutch plate rattle, for which there is a TSB.

Could be a stuck injector, too. California trucks can detect a stuck pintle, but regular trucks cannot.

I've heard it before; mine's knocked once in a while at idle. With you being a diesel mechanic and I'm not one, so I can't tell if your definition of "terrible knock" is the same as mine, but to me it was similar to the PSD idle knock. It never lasted long and there was no rhyme or reason that I can figure out. I continue to drive it...... Mine is stock and not souped up like yours.

BTW, Cotsco has great deals on USB cables (noted from your sig).

Try loosening the injector nuts one at a time to locate which one it is. Then you could try switching the injectors to see if it is an injector.

Could it also be normal pilot injection noises? I mean, we know pilot injection will turn off under certain sensor conditions.

Yeah don't crack the common rail lines. High pressure. Probably lousy fuel knock. Mine does it once in a while. Put some additive stuff in it (I don't) and it will probably go away.

Bad bad bad idea on a HPCR system! (as you guys realized ) Never run your engine or be close to the system with a loosened nut because of constant extreme high pressure

Instead try disconnecting one injector control harness at a time and that could narrow it to 2 cylinders.

Also check how fast the tick is. If there's about 6 ticks per second at idle it's injection related most likely, if it's 12 times per second then it could be a reversed piston but not likely.

I would try fuel from a different place and/or good fuel additive. Some who have had a knock got rid of it with additive.

I corrected that in the next post, when I wrote that post I did not realize that I was in the 3rd gne section. Sorry if I misled anyone.

Haulin I laughed when I read the last line of your sig. Not funny for you with the engine but that you have a sense of humor about it. Thought about buying a '03??

Nah, I'm just getten to know this one real good. I was just thinkin, haven't removed the door bolts yet Seriously, I usually keep a truck 10 to 15 years, got a while on this one yet. I like the truck. Except for the engine problems now, I had it just about where I wanted it with power, handling. Jeez, it even has a new heater core With all the repairs miles and upgrades, it still rides smooth, tight cab, fast and comfortable, still get complements on how it looks. When it starts feeling bomby than I will consider a new one.
