I put 31 gallons of GASOLINE in my truck

Luckily for me, California has the vapor recovery system for gas and not for diesel. Nozzles are completely different. If I put gas in mine, I'm having a really bad day. I have picked them up before because the handles are green but realized before I started pumping.

I have had diesels most of my driving life of one type or another, and I did once put diesel in my '65 Malibu SS Convertible! I caught it after about 7 gallons then topped it off with premium. It smoked and ran lousy for a while but didn't hurt anything. Of course I was 18 yoa at the time. Oh and I have substituted diesel for gas when the only gas burning vehicle on the farm was on the verge of running out and I needed it to get to the store, 5 miles. Amazing what a chevy or dodge v8 will run on if it has too.

Just did that, only pumped 5 gallons then smelled gas,is was near empty was able to syphon out about 3 gallons from the tank topped off with diesel and ran it, running fine and couldn't tell a difference. 2006 5.9

I did this with my old '01 Ford PSD. I was towing my aunt's car to Phoenix, pulled into a fuel station in California at about midnight. Kids started arguing and distracted me. My wife said, "Why'd you tell me to pull up to the green nozzle when your using the black one?"------OOPS!
17 gallons of unleaded in the tank. The attendant had no solution and barely spoke English (middle eastern). So I bought three 1 gallon gas cans and a garden hose and syphoned out the gas. I never turned the key on so the fuel pump would cycle. Then filled with diesel and kept going. Never had a problem. Other than the glorious tasted of unleaded for the next three days.

Most of the places I fill up the pumps are so nasty, there's no mistaking them for gas. I try to use places that service semi trucks so you get the freshest diesel. They all have the big nozzle.
