I found out what a torque converter does...
My TC is about shot, I have a Goerend trans on order.
I have to put my truck in neutral when I come to a stop sign or the engine bogs down, then starts revving up more and more as I fight to hold it in place. So something is FUBAR in there.
On Saturday I was dropping my daughter off at her deer stand and had to go up a plowed hill at about a 10 degree angle. The truck couldn't do it. It would smoke and just sit. I had to put the trans in 4 low to climb the hill. So that's why we need the TC to slip and build engine speed!!! (Still trying to figure how a manual does it.... My TC must be locking the engine in at like 500 rpm's or something).
Then on Sunday my 10 year old boy shot a running deer on our farm and it was wounded and running. We hopped in the truck and tore after it through plowed fields and cut corn, baja-ing like a couple of maniacs. We were doing donuts and full power slides through the soft dirt as we tried to keep the deer away from the road and toward our land so we didn't lose it, and when we fianlly came to the road after about a mile and a half the trans wasn't locked up anymore! It seems to drive much better now! I must have 'fixed' something inside.
