Howling sound...help!
#16
I've got the "howling" on a 04/auto 3500--does it when cold. Sounds like the "howl" created by blowing over a beer/pop bottle with your upper lip extended over the bottle opening...only much louder...this is not a rearend noise that I'm hearing...gets quieter (and goes away) as vehicle warms up.
I have no clue what's doing this yet (400 miles on truck)

I also have the same sound its starts at around 25mph the goes away at 40mph. I have 13,000 miles on the truck and the howl is getting worse. I took it to the dealer aroung 7,000 miles. They said it was normal turbo noise, I know it is not the turbo, it is only speed dependant not engine RPM or load. I belive it is coming from somewhere in the front drivetrain(Axle, wheel barings). I will be taking it back to the dealer again real soon.
I bet its only happening on 4x4's.

My truck is a 2004 3500 SRW, HO, 48re Auto, LWB, 3.73, 4x4 . I'm taking it back to the dealership today to see went they are going to do now. When i picked the truck up after they put the yoke in they told me that if that didn't fix it there was a few more things that they can try. maybe the ring and pinion ?
The noise on my is coming from somewhere in the rearend, I think.
The ones that are hearing the noise do you have 3.73 or 4.10 ?
Longbed or shortbed? I'm not sure if it makes a differents on what gears or size of truck you have , but it would be interesting to see if one of these are common in trucks that have the noise.
thanks.

I have the same noise you are all describing. I got the truck last January and never heard it at all last winter. It started this past fall. It only makes the noise for the first couple of miles in the morning when the truck is cold. I am currently not overly concerned with it. I still have plenty of warranty miles left. My truck configuration is listed in my signature.

As I think about it... my noise seems "engine load" related...that is, gets louder as I press pedal or maintain pedal(maintains volume), but noise volume recedes as I trail off the accelerator...(this makes it sound like turbine speed related-but I've never heard a turbo sound like this-could this be turbo "hum" instead of turbo "whistle" )

My fan roars when warm with the AC on. Stops after you reach a certain RPM. Haven't heard it any other time, though. It's easy to tell if it's the fan, just press the pedal a little when in neutral and sitting still.

I have this sound also. My truck is an 03 2500 Long bed/Quad Cab 47RE 4.10 rear with anti-spin diff. Just under 10k miles.
I've heard it for a while now.
The noise sounds like it is coming from the rear-end, it is consistently at between 18 and 25 mph, both accelerating, decelerating, and coasting. If I let go of the accelerator and let it coast, it whines until just under 20 mph and disappears. Also, if I let it coast from 30, it starts at 25 mph and stops like above.
I've had it in the dealship twice for this, 1st time, they added some special diff fluid for my anti-spin diff. No change. Second time, they rebuilt the rear and the service manager said that it looked like it 'wasn't set up right'. Well, 3 days after that, the noise came back.
It does seem temperature dependent. This past weekend, we had temps in the 50s and I only heard it when starting out. Now that the temps are down in the teens, it's there even after a long run.

Well the rearend gears , 3.73 or 4.10 doesn't seem like the culprit. As FredG has 4.10 with the same problem , maybe something with the Anti spin rear end , mine has that and i noticed FredG has it also. What about you other guys, do you have the Anti Spin rear end?

I had what sounds like the exact same problem when I bought my truck. Started at about 200 miles. Told the dealer about it when I dropped it off to get some other minor irritating stuff taken care of. He said he had his tech "realign" the rear end, whatever that means, and it hasn't happened since. For what it's worth.....
