How to upgrade rear axle

What is the easiest way to upgrade to a posi style unit, find a used rear end or buy and install the posi unit in the one that I already have? Which would be the cheapest way to go? Would the rear end have to be set up by a professional if I upgraded mine? I found this http://www.ringpinion.biz/product_in...1b5120fe275dc6 but I am not sure what else would be needed for to complete the installation

My truck is 05 RAM 4x4

Are you sure it does not already have a posi in it. Most do.

Would the rear end have to be set up by a professional if I upgraded mine?
Unless you know what you are doing and have the right tools, let a pro do it.

well if you know how to set the backlash putting a posi into yours is probably the best way. I doubt your going to find a rearend used for less money then just posi from Dodge. If you want to know pricing the best thing is ask a shop how much to install it. I would guess the posi unit is 1000 dollars to buy, maybe less. I have only bought them for car rearends, the last one costing around 500 6yrs ago. good luck. changing the whole thing is not so easy either. I would just add the new part, you know where and what you have done to yours.

When I changed the fluid in rear I verified that it was an open diff.

I Blew up my posi in my 03, I replaced it with another factory Posi from dodge(that was a big bill perdy much a whole new rear end), The powertrain place that did the work said that the factory dodge posi is as strong if not stonger then an aftermarket.

If near Orlando, FL. I would give Pro Gear a call (407) 872-1901 we have bought stuff from them and I think they also do installs on what they sell. (setting backlash could get to tight sometimes if your not sure)

In an 05 he does not have Dana axles, or at least I do not believe that he does, it should be a AAM I believe. PM sent, I have a full axle and all internals for sale, axle housing is tweaked, but internals are fine.

Our rear ends w/factory posi, act like open diffs. Jack up rear, put in neutral, one tire goes one way and the other the opposite. There aren't any clutches in these rear ends. I haven't got a good explanation as to how they work, but it's called progressive. It takes a split second for engagment to occur and sometimes will cause shaking. Especially in turns. I've been told they are similar to the Auburn differentials you can buy for cars.

Intalling the posi will be cheaper and you can do it your self. Make sure that the stock ring and pinion will work with this posi before you buy it. Also buy a shim kit, carrier bearings, gear marking compound and diff cover gasket from a local parts store. You will need to get a Dial indicator on a magnetic stand. You can get one from Harbor Freight fairly cheap or Nortern Tool. You can find the specs online for your AAM axle. The hard part making sure your teeth on your pinion mesh correctly to the ring gear and I can't explain it over the internet, best to go to your local libary and see if they have books on rebuilding differentials. Its more than just setting backlash your teeth have to mesh correctly or the ring and pinion will only last 6 or 7 months. You don't have to have a book specifically for your truck and diff just a book on any diff will explain and show correct tooth pattern.
