I think the first oil change is the most crucial as there are metal shaving from the new parts wearing in. I would recommend changing it between 3,000 and 5,000 miles and then you can go to 5,000 to 7,000 miles depending on driving conditions.

I guess I am one of the real **** ones and changed it with less than 100 miles (93 to be exact)...I too am a believer of gettin out the machine tid bits out ASAP and change every 3k .done this with all my new cars....almost every new car would go over 250k +-(almost as I owned a couple of MBZ diesels) with out using a drop of oil AND would pass Calif Smogextortion parameters with ease...i also think 7000 on ANY dino oil is twice too long in there....no flaming please....IHMO for the facty to recomend such (on any engine) induces repairs AFTER the warranty is up.....my two cents

I changed mine at about 2500 miles, remember our trucks come with fleetgaurd full flow filters, these are pretty effective at removing particals in the size range that cause wear. If you avoid high revs when cold you will not bypass the filter and force unfiltered oil through the engine. It won't hurt to change earlier and like others have stated changing at the intervals specified by the manufacture is probably ok as well. I have added a bypass filter to mine as it will filter particals down to 1um. The full flow is not effective below about 6-7um. .001" = 25.4um. My motivation for the bypass filter is no guilt long change intervals.

regards,

jim

Don't waste your time responding to me. Hurry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You might need another oil change. Don't let it go.... You have to get all the metal shavings out of the old oil...........LMAO

Gman66, check your private messages. I suggest you learn some manners unless you want to disappear from the DTR.

Hey Trik, dont let it get to you, your bound to run into a Moron every now and than!! I dealt with one a few months ago, he was saying that I was too young to own a Diesel!!

I'm with you, I only have 2,555 miles on my truck, but owned it since mid June, I know its not that many miles for the time Ive owned it, but its alot of stop and go driving in those little miles. I'm planning on having my oil and filter done at around 2,700 mi, cause I have a 3hr ride to Upstate NY to do some hunting, and would like to have fresh oil and any particles out for that 3 hr drive.

If you read the manual it also says to changed your oil every three months or 7500 miles. At least mine does on schedule "B". I have a buddy who owned a diesel ford cube van and they voided his warranty claim because he changed fluids by mileage and exceeded the time frames. My gut experience tells me every three months is bizzare and designed by DC to cover their butts. But as long as I'm under warranty that's what I do.... 3 Months. I usually run 3000-4500 miles in the three months by the way.

you boys wastin' lots of good oil. Dodge/Cummins has a 7500/15000 oil change schedule and I follow "their recommendation" as their the ones that warranties the best engine in a light duty truck........JIM

Allright J&L I'll agree with ya that it is a waste of oil but since the warranty also says three months or 7500 miles.....whats up with that ?

How many miles before 1st oil change?

I do not agree that the very first oil change is an unnecessary waste of engine lubricant, because the smallest metal particles left in the engine after the manufacturing process can somewhat score the surfaces of moving metal components in the engine if those circulating abrasive pieces get past the Mopar/Fleetguard oil filter. The factory oil filter removes particles down to about 25 microns. Another reason for me preforming the initial oil change much before the owner manual scheduled mileage was to get the opportunity to install a more efficient engine oil filter. I installed the Donaldson ELF 7349 oil filter instead of the Mopar 05083285AA, because the Donaldson removes 98% of the particles down to 20 microns in size and 50% of the particles down to 5 microns in size. When the break-in is complete on my Cummis I will install a by-pass filter system that filters out particles down to one half of one micron.

Yes, it may be an excessive waste of oil to change engine oil more often than 7500 miles after the break-in period, provided the time duration is not excessively over the owner manual recommendations. In my next message I will relate an experience I had with engine oil in a gasoline engine that was allowed to go for an extended period of time because the mileage was low.
